=== (1) The last Monday Night Discussion of the Year ===
“The Mirror of Justice: The Problem of Mercy in Theology and Politics.” Fr.
Moloney will give a talk based on the paper he gave at the American
Catholic Philosophical Association conference in San Francisco a few weeks
ago. We often want society to be more just, because justice is a good. And
mercy is also something that we desire. However, we usually define justice
and mercy as opposites or contraries, where mercy involves setting aside or
relaxing the requirement of justice and the law. That creates a problem,
because justice would then be merciless, and mercy unjust. What’s more, God
could not be merciful without being unjust, but God is supremely just as
well as merciful. So there are problems with the very concepts of justice
and mercy as we often use them. Pizza will be served.
Main Dining Room of W11, 8:15 pm on 11/21

=== (2) No Masses, Adoration and Confession due to Thanksgiving Break ===

=== (3) Thanksgiving Get Together ===
On the Feast of Albert the Great, patron saint of scientists, Fr. Nicanor
Austriaco, O.P. (PhD '96) will celebrate a special Mass for Scientists. It
will be Tuesday, November 15, at 5:15 p.m. in the MIT Chapel. There will be
a reception in W11 to follow. This event is co-sponsored by the newly
founded Society of Catholic Scientists, and off-campus scientists are
invited: http://www.catholicscientists.org/events/20161115-goldmass

=== (4) Thomistic Institute at MIT ===
Friday December 2, at 7:00 pm in 4-163 Prof. Stephen Barr, a particle
physicist from the University of Delaware and author of Modern Physics and
Ancient Faith(Notre Dame, 2003) will give a talk entitled, “What's So
Special About the Universe? Multiverse Theory and Catholic Theology.”
There’s a puzzle in physics that might point at the existence of God: It is
extremely improbable that all of the major constants of physics fall within
the narrow parameters necessary to sustain human life. So improbable, in
fact, that the best scientific explanation for these 'anthropic
coincidences' could be that an intelligent being outside the physical
universe designed the universe with human life in mind. Some physicists
have proposed instead that there are a large or even infinite number of
undetectable parallel universes, in which case it would not be so
improbable that at least one supports life. But these multiverse theories
have deep problems, which make it harder to sustain an intellectually
serious atheism. Refreshments will be provided. Contact
thomisticinstitute at mit.edu for details or go to
