Unfortunately New York has gotten a reputation for not being the worlds
friendliest tango community, please be nice to each other, no-one has to
dance with anyone else if they don't want to, but there's no reason not say
hi and be polite and friendly with each other. If no-one wants to dance
with you, you might want to make sure your clothes are clean and that your
breath doesn't smell or possibly because your prospective partners feel
that your embrace is uncomfortable that you bump into people too much, or
that your only interested in doing steps rather than actually dancing with
someone.

Just because you've taken private classes with such and such famous teacher
does not make you a great dancer. If people want to dance with you they
will, you can't make them.

Listen to the music, don't bump into people, don't smell, go to practicas
and ask people what's comfortable for them and ask them what they are
looking for in a dance, and at a milonga try to make each dance special.
