PATangoS 5th Anniversary Weekend with Robert Hauk

ROBERT HAUK is one of the most respected "milonguero"
(close embrace) style dancers in the US. This style,
developed in the crowded milongas of Buenos Aires,
emphasizes the connection between the couple and
musicality. Music is at the heart of this style, and
Robert’s knowledge of the music makes him a popular DJ at
major tango festivals across the nation.

Ever the tango philosopher, Robert brings a soulfulness
into his dance. Subtlety and the tango trance are
hallmarks of his style. His main tango inspiration is
Susana Miller of Buenos Aires. Other important influences
are Cacho Dante, Nestor Ray, Alicia Pons, and more
recently, Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa. Robert
has also spent significant time in Buenos Aires dancing
with the old-style milongueros. His web page is

Friday, Jan. 12 (Church of the Redeemer)
----------------------------------------
7:30-8:00pm. WARMUP & REGISTRATION.

8:00-9:30pm. 1. FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT IN TANGO (All
levels). This is an in-depth look at walking in the
apilado embrace in both parallel and crossed feet. It is a
good starting point for the rest of Robert’s classes.

9:30-10:30pm. Practica.

Saturday, Jan. 13 (Wilkins School)
----------------------------------
Noon-1:00pm. TANGO EXCHANGE. Open time for folks to
exchange steps and practice together. Be prepared to show
something you think people might be interested in learning.
Bring videos on your own laptop. Led by Trini & Sean.

1:00-1:30pm. WARMUP & REGISTRATION.

1:30-3:00pm. 2. BUILDING TURN COMBINATIONS: PART I
(Int). The check step turns (aka changes of front) are
fundamental building blocks in the apilado embrace. We
will use these to open the door to more complex
combinations.

3:30-5:00pm. 3. BUILDING TURN COMBINATIONS: PART II
(Int). Using material from the previous class, we will
develop movements that can be combined to make more complex
right turns. We will explore exits to back ochos, and use
of sacadas to tighten the turns. Participants should be at
the solid intermediate level or higher.

Sunday, Jan. 14 (Church of the Redeemer)
----------------------------------------
1:00-1:30pm. WARMUP & REGISTRATION.

1:30-3:00pm. 4. DANCING TO ALL THE ORCHESTRAS (Int). We
will study the music of different orchestras, developing a
feeling for how the orchestras differ, and what is common
between them. We will start with a rhythmic approach to
the music, and develop another approach involving pauses
and open space in the movement.

3:30-5:00pm. 5. MILONGA (Int). This class will develop a
core vocabulary for dancing milonga, including traspie. We
will focus on the feeling of the music and discover that
milonga music isn't as fast as people usually feel it.
Participants should already be familiar with milonga with
and without traspie.
