This week's MIT QIP seminar will take place on Monday, Sep. 27 at
16:00 in 4-237, and features:

Quantum Limits on Global Positioning Systems

by Professor Seth Lloyd (MIT Mechanical Engineering)

ABSTRACT

This talk derives fundamental physical limits to the accuracy with
which systems like the global positioning system (GPS) can map out
the geometry of space and time. The so-called `standard quantum
limit' may be standard and may be quantum, but it is not a limit: it
can be surpassed using quantum effects such as entanglement and
squeezing. Results from the physics of computation can be used to
derive a new bound, the quantum geometric limit, for the accuracy to
which distance and time can be measured.

Next week's feature: Prof. Jeff Shapiro (MIT EECS & RLE) on the
"Capacity of Bosonic Communications".
