"REBUILDING HOMES AND COMMUNITIES IN AFGHANISTAN"

Lalith Lankatilleke, the Senior Housing Advisor for UN-Habitat in Kabul,
will give a presentation on the rebuilding of Kabul, community
involvement and shelter.    He will use an interactive format, so it
should be quite different from the more conventional presentations.
 
Lalith's area of specialization is people-centered policy formulation
and participatory planning.
He is willing to meet with students during the afternoon for more
informal discussion. Send an email (sigus at mit.edu) so that this could be
arranged.
 
Lalith started to work in Afghanistan on June 2002 as the Senior Housing
Advisor.  During this time he:
- Developed a People's Rebuilding and Housing Development Strategy.
(This paper was used as background to the 'Kabul Challenge' SIGUS
workshop in January) 
- Completed the rebuilding of 3300 houses in 3 months with returnee
families. 
- Prepared project documents for the upgrading of informal settlements
in 
Kabul.  
- Responsible for the rebuilding of 3000 houses in Kandahar and 2750 in
Jalalabad and 1000 Mazar-e-Sharif
- Responsible for the implementation of the World Bank funded Municipal 
Public Works Programme and Kabul Solid Waste Management Project
 
Before Kabul, he set up a country-wide poverty alleviation program in
Bangladesh, established a the national People's Housing Process which
set up a mechanism for rapid  provision and regularization of land
throughout South Africa, set up the national shelter strategy in
Namibia.  He also has worked in Thailand, Sudan, Seychelles, Sri Lanka
and Botswana.
