The Pakistani independent satellite channel, GEO, will cover the conference.

 Distinguished panelists will discuss if and how genuine functioning 
democracy can be developed in Pakistan. They will review recent developments -- 
economic reforms, rise of new satellite TV channels and Internet, emergence of 
innovative NGOs, induction of large numbers of women in parliament, rise of 
religious parties, restructuring of the bureaucracy at local levels, election of 
Nazims—and assess if Pakistani institutions have become more responsive to citizens
’ aspirations and less corrupt? Can civil society be further strengthened and 
how?

Pak-Millennium Conference History

Pak-Millennium Conferences represent a successful tradition of discussing 
important issues. PMC2002 on Higher Education reform in Pakistan included Dr. Ata 
ur Rahman, Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, 
President Aga Khan Univ., Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Governor, State Bank, Syed Babar Ali, 
Pro-Chancellor, LUMS, Professor Henry Rosovsky, Dean Emeritus, Harvard Univ., 
Vice Chancellors of Karachi and Peshawar Univ., and leading professors. The 
Conference contributions included recommendations to the President’s Task Force 
on Higher Education Reform.
