DETAILS:

On September 11, 1973, the democratically elected government
of Salvador Allende in Chile was overthrown by a US-supported
military coup and a brutal dictatorship was installed. What
can we learn about democracy and terrorism by looking back at
this event and the actions that followed it?

We'll start with a message from ISABEL ALLENDE, one of Latin
America's foremost writers (and the niece of Salvador Allende).
CHAPPELL LAWSON, who served in the Clinton White House as NSC
Director of Inter-American Affairs, will review the history of
US policy and actions in Latin America. ELIZABETH GARRELS will
speak about her experience in the 1970s as a member of the
Venezuelan Committee of Solidarity with Chile. NYNA BRAEL
POLUMBAUM will show us, with words and pictures, what Chile
was like before the coup and afterwards. SERGIO REYES, an
activist, musician, and former political prisoner, will address
current social, economic, and human-rights concerns in Chile.
And NOAM CHOMSKY will discuss terrorism & US foreign policy,
in Chile and elsewhere.

The event is co-sponsored by the MIT Large Event Fund. It
will be moderated by Professor LAWSON, Professor GARRELS, &
THERESA TOBIN, the Director of the MIT Humanities Library.

Admission is free, but please arrive by 12:40pm to be assured
of a seat.
