Good afternoon,

Information Systems & Technology (IS&T) has updated the Base Virtual Machine (VM), Administrative Staff VM, and Student VM for Spring 2014. These VMs are the first from IS&T that use the 64-bit version of Windows 7 SP1. All are preloaded with Sophos Anti-Virus, Certaid, security updates, and bundled software.

The Administrative Staff VM includes software such as Outlook, BrioQuery, and the SAPgui 7.30 patch level 5. The Admin VM is recommended only on Macintosh host machines as a way to access Windows-only software.

The Student VM includes software such as Emacs and JDK with NetBeans. The Student VM is designed to be used on Windows or Macintosh host machines, but an extra step is required to configure the full feature set on a Windows host.

The Base VM is designed for experienced users who wish to further customize the virtual machine for Windows or Macintosh host machines. Limited assistance is provided for the Base Virtual Machine.

Download and Setup
Available for download on the IS&T Software Grid<http://ist.mit.edu/windows/7/vm>, each virtual machine is approximately 8 GB compressed. For such large downloads, IS&T strongly recommends using a wired connection.

Please note that in order to use this VM, you must have VMware Fusion 6 (Macs) or later or VMware Workstation 10 (Windows or Linux) or later installed and working beforehand. VMware is also available for download via the IS&T Software Grid<http://ist.mit.edu/software-hardware?type=39&platform=All&users=All&field_a_k_a_value=VMWare&recommended_only=All>.

You can download the VM, set your username and password, and access Windows software without needing to install Windows or the included applications.

Documentation
As you wait for these very large VMs to download, please read through the applicable short documentation:

Support
The IS&T Help Desk is ready to assist you in setting up the Administrative Staff or Student VMs or using the supported software it includes. You can contact the Help Desk at 617.253.1101 or helpdesk at mit.edu<mailto:helpdesk at mit.edu>. You can also submit a request online<http://ist.mit.edu/help>.

IS&T plans to release new versions of the virtual machines twice a year. The release will include updated versions of software with security and anti-virus patches applied. We welcome feedback about the included software and settings.

We hope these VMs will benefit you and the communities you support.

Thank you on behalf of the Virtual Machine Release Team,
Dave Conlon
