1. National CyberCenters Program

The National CyberCenters Program is an entry-level competition focussing on the fundamentals of cyber security and covers Networking, Operating Systems and Systems Administration, three areas that are the essential foundations of effective cybersecurity careers.


October 22 is the deadline for veterans and high school students to register for the Cyber Foundations/CyberCenters program, that includes on-line tutorials and challenges. Those who show talent will earn opportunities for acceptance in the new CyberCenters program where they will get intensive hands-on training and internships in the only fast-track to high-paying careers in cybersecurity. Fees are very low ($25) but may still be waived.

2. Threat of Cyberattack on the U.S.

Are we facing a "cyber-Pearl Harbor?" Last week Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta warned that the United States is increasingly vulnerable to foreign computer hackers who could dismantle the nation's power grid, transportation systems, financial networks and government.


He was apparently responding to a recent wave of cyber attacks on large American financial institutions. He cited an attack in August on the state oil company Saudi Aramaco, which infected and made useless more than 30,000 computers. He is also pushing for legislation on Capitol Hill, requiring new standards at infrastructure facilities, where a computer breach could cause significant casualties or economic damage.
