Support from MIT WGS and WXGS after the Supreme Court ruling on Roe vs. Wade

As you have likely heard, on June 24th, the Supreme Court released its ruling on Roe v. Wade. While the unprecedented leak of the draft opinion might have prepared us in some way for this decision, we know that there is also no real way to anticipate our reactions.

In order to hold space for the many feelings that might come up with this decision, we’d like to invite you to join us. This is not a place to debate or argue. This is a space to process and acknowledge the many implications of this ruling, with recognition of the impact it will no doubt have. There will be open drop-in hours at these spots and times:

Women’s and Gender Studies: [Tues 6/28 anytime 10am - 4pm] Building 14<http://whereis.mit.edu/?go=14>, room 14N-213
Rainbow Lounge: [Thurs 6/30 anytime 12pm - 5pm] Walker Memorial<http://whereis.mit.edu/?go=50>, room 50-250

We hope that above all, you do what you can to take care of yourself. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to follow every second of the news if it is upsetting or anxiety provoking for you. Take a break, go for a walk, give your mind a minute away.

If you would like to schedule a time to speak to someone 1:1, please do! These are all resources who would welcome you for whatever kind of conversation would be helpful.

  1. Sign up for a summer workshop series on communicating your science with the public
When: July 6th – August 10th, 2022 Wednesday’s 4 – 6:30PM EST
Where: 24-307

Details: It is the holiday season. You are visiting your beautiful hometown and having a good time. Since you are the smart one in the family who goes to MIT, they want to know what kind of cool science you work on. You feel up to the challenge and start strong. Eventually drawing blank stares from the listeners and fumbling for words, you convince yourself that your research is too complicated and explaining it to a non-expert is just too hard. Sounds familiar? You are not alone!

In this 6-session workshop series, you will learn about the following elements of effective communication:

1. Understand your audience and set communication goals

2. Identify, craft, and shape a clear central message

3. Develop a logical and compelling narrative to support a central message

4. Use appropriate language and helpful analogies

5. Add interest and emphasis using vocal modulation and non-verbal cues

The series will culminate in an authentic opportunity for participants to present their research or another technical topic of their choice to the public via a live virtual/in-person talk or video. More information is available here<https://docs.google.com/document/d/11uUCV5GOrta1kn96ECn1C2u-S9LDuK4L3UE-aNSWG10/edit?usp=sharing>.

This workshop is for MIT graduate students and postdocs in STEM fields.

To apply, complete this application form by 11:59pm on Monday, June 27th, 2022. The workshop will meet in-person from 4 – 6:30PM on Wednesdays from July 6th to August 10th.

The workshop is sponsored by the MIT Communication Lab<https://mitcommlab.mit.edu/>. For questions or accommodation requests, contact Dr. Deanna Montgomery at dmont at mit.edu<mailto:dmont at mit.edu>

Guest Speaker: Rachel Moore, founder and lead educator for The Human Factor<https://thehumanf.actor/about-us/>; Rachel has designed negotiation curriculum for the MIT School of Engineering and Sloan School of Management .

  1. Participate in a relationship pattern study (and help out a womxn grad student!)
Are you interested in potentially learning more about your relationship?
If you have been married or in a committed life partnership for at least 5 years and are interested in participating in 3 short surveys (spread over 2 weeks), please consider participating in this study! Participants will respond to questions about their relationship as well as potentially being asked to engage in a private conversation with their partner about a common relationship pattern. These relationship patterns often describe a core challenge in one’s relationship and discussing these patterns is meant to help couples better understand each partner’s contribution to that pattern. Email relationshippatternstudy at gmail.com<mailto:relationshippatternstudy at gmail.com> to participate! Participants who complete all 3 surveys over 2 weeks will be eligible for a $10 gift card!
If you have any questions, please contact clinical psychology doctoral student and study organizer Jenna Rice at jerice at clarku.edu<mailto:jerice at clarku.edu>.

  1. Opportunity to receive precise birth control recommendations through adyn
About adyn:
adyn<https://www.adyn.com/?utm_source=network_outreach&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=gwamit_laurel> is making birth control selection more scientific and less of an experiment – because nobody should have to suffer through trial-and-error to find their best fit. The Birth Control Test is an at-home test that detects your hormone levels and genetic risk for certain side effects. The test includes a virtual care visit with a licensed medial provider who will help you choose a birth control method based on your results and preferences. You can even fulfill a prescription through adyn for easy, at-home delivery.
Promo exclusively for gwaMIT:
adyn is offering the gwaMIT community $50 off their order of The Birth Control Test<https://adyn.com/shop/the-birth-control-test/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=gwamit> with the promo code GWAMIT50 at checkout! You can contact Laurel Marcus, a 2020 MIT Sloan graduate and current employee at adyn, with any questions (laurel at adyn.com<mailto:laurel at adyn.com>).
