  1. Register for MIT’s 2nd Annual Research Slam
Are you interested in building your science communication skills and learning to share your research with a general audience, all while competing for a total of $2,400 in cash prizes? This April, MIT will hold its second annual Research Slam competition<http://researchslam.mit.edu/> featuring postdocs and PhD candidates. The Slam is modeled after the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) format, which is a competition hosted by hundreds of universities worldwide in which students present their research and its significance in just 3 minutes!
To help you prepare, a pair of interactive virtual workshops from communications experts will introduce you to crafting & polishing your talk (register on Handshake via the hyperlinks):

  *   Workshop #1: Creating a Compelling Three-Minute Talk<https://app.joinhandshake.com/edu/events/958519> — Feb. 15th, 3:00-4:30 PM EST
     * This workshop will introduce you to the 3MT format and help you develop key skills to prepare your own talk: distilling your central message, building it into an engaging story, and crafting a visually appealing slide.
  *   Workshop #2: How to Present Your Three-Minute Talk Effectively<https://app.joinhandshake.com/edu/events/966499> — March 2nd, 1:00-2:30 PM EST
     * This activity-based workshop will help you build confidence as a presenter and will equip you with life-long tools to deliver your ideas eloquently, engagingly, and effectively.
     * Attending Workshop #1 is not a prerequisite for joining this workshop.
Participating in these workshops is not necessary to participate in the Slam; rather, they are a resource to help you prepare your submission. Furthermore, you are welcome to participate in the workshops even if you decide not to compete in the Research Slam. Lastly, sign-up here<https://app.joinhandshake.com/edu/events/970116> if you'd like to get notifications and reminders about preparatory events, approaching deadlines, and other direct communication from the MIT Research Slam planning team.
Research Slam submissions will be due by March 15th; please see the Slam website<http://researchslam.mit.edu/> for details & guidelines, and sign-up on Handshake<https://app.joinhandshake.com/edu/events/970116> for updates. A Public Showcase of finalist talks will take place on April 11th where talks will be evaluated by a diverse slate of judges and winners will be announced.
Beyond the cash prizes, the communication skills you hone and display during the Slam will pay significant dividends in your job hunt and in networking - plus, you’ll have a great video to feature on LinkedIn and on other platforms. PhD candidate winners of the Slam are also eligible for entry to the 3MT regional competition of the Ivy+ Universities.
The MIT Research Slam is organized by Career Advising and Professional Development<https://app.joinhandshake.com/appointments/new> (CAPD), the Communication Lab<http://mitcommlab.mit.edu/find>, the Writing & Communication Center<https://cmsw.mit.edu/writing-and-communication-center/>, and the GSC External Affairs Board<https://gsc.mit.edu/>. Please contact research-slam at mit.edu<mailto:research-slam at mit.edu> with any questions, and make sure to encourage your friends to participate!

  1. Sign up for the Spring 2022 workshop series for the Graduate Certificate in Technical Leadership
Workshop 2 – Wednesday, March 2 from 5-7pm, Room 32-144
Leading at the intersection of management and engineering
By Joan Rubin, Executive Director, MIT Systems Design Management
Engineers and technologists build their credibility and reputation within organizations as problem solvers, but many struggle to translate that subject matter expertise into leadership roles across the enterprise. This workshop will examine skills that need to be honed to understand the business trade-offs in technical decisions and successful communication strategies to build “respect” in leading at the intersection of engineering and management. Students will participate in a case-type study evaluating R&D investment in a medical device organization.
Workshop 3 – Wednesday March 30, 5:00-7:00 p.m., Room 32-144
Focus of the workshop will be on decision making processes in engineering projects
By Bryan Moser, Senior Lecturer, Systems Design Management

Workshop 4 – Thursday April 14, 5:00-7:00 p.m., Room 32-144
Project Management Methodologies Part I
By Jin Wu, Lecturer, Graduate Program in Engineering Leadership
In this two-part series of workshops, we will look at an overview of different project management practices that are used in the industry. This includes Waterfall, Agile (overall), Scrum, LEAN, Six Sigma, and Spiral. This is a good crash course for students that have little or no exposure to project management methodologies. It can also be a good overview for students that are already familiar with one or more methodologies and are curious about the other methodologies.
Workshop 1 will focus on Waterfall vs. Agile (overall), and Scrum. Sessions are independent and you do not need to attend both.

Workshop 5 - Thursday April 21, 5:00-7:00 p.m., Room 32-144
