Join us for a conversation with Dr. Rana el Kaliouby, Author of "Girl Decoded", and CEO of Affectiva!
When: April 16th, 2021 12-1PM EST
Link to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-conversation-with-dr-rana-el-kaliouby-author-of-girl-decoded-tickets-149173001463
Event details: Join us for a conversation with a highly inspirational and influential author and CEO, Dr. Rana el Kaliouby. Get a chance to speak to Rana and learn about her journey as a woman in STEM.
About Dr. Rana el Kaliouby: A pioneer in Emotion AI, Rana el Kaliouby, Ph.D., is Co-Founder and CEO of Affectiva, and author of the newly released book Girl Decoded: A Scientist’s Quest to Reclaim Our Humanity by Bringing Emotional Intelligence to Technology. A passionate advocate for humanizing technology, ethics in AI and diversity, Rana has been recognized on Fortune’s 40 Under 40 list and as one of Forbes' Top 50 Women in Tech. Rana is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and a Young Presidents' Organization member, and co-hosted a PBS NOVA series on AI. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and a Post Doctorate from MIT.
About Rana’s book: In a captivating memoir, an Egyptian-American visionary and scientist provides an intimate view of her personal transformation as she follows her calling – to humanize our technology and how we connect with one another. Rana el Kaliouby is a rarity in both the tech world and her native Middle East: a Muslim leader and CEO, a woman in charge in a field that is still overwhelmingly white and male. Growing up in Egypt and Kuwait, el Kaliouby was raised by a conservative father who valued tradition – yet also had high expectations for his daughters – and a mother who was one of the first female computer programmers in the Middle East. Even before el Kaliouby broke ground as a scientist, she broke the rules of what it meant to be an obedient daughter and, later, an obedient wife to pursue her own daring dream. After earning her PhD at Cambridge, el Kaliouby, now the divorced mother of two, moved to America to pursue her mission to humanize technology before it dehumanizes us. The majority of our communication is conveyed through non-verbal cues: facial expressions, tone of voice, body language. But that communication is lost when we interact with others through our smartphones and devices. The result is a digital universe that’s emotion blind. To combat our fundamental loss of emotional intelligence online, she co-founded Affectiva, the pioneer in the new field of Emotion AI, allowing our technology to understand humans the way we understand one another. Girl Decoded chronicles Rana el Kaliouby’s journey from a “nice Egyptian girl” to a woman carving her own path as she revolutionizes technology. But decoding herself – learning to express and act on her own emotions–would prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

Meet the Department Reps!
[A person with her arms crossed Description automatically generated with low confidence] Devaki Sakhamuru / System Design and Management
Please tell us about your research interests. Devaki is a M.S. Candidate in the MIT System Design and Management Program working towards a masters degree in Engineering and Management. She is currently a Research Assistant at the MIT Energy Initiative, where she is studying the Indian industrial sector and developing techno-economic assessments for decarbonation pathways in Sesame framework (Sustainable Energy Systems Analysis Modeling Environment). Devaki is passionate about sustainability and in finding ways to make positive climate impact.
Who is your favorite womxn from history or the present times, and why? I am inspired by Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist and humanitarian. She is known for human rights advocacy, right to education for women, and children. In her native Swat Valley, they had banned girls from attending school. I personally cannot imagine a situation like this in our world where disparities and inequities such as these are severely pronounced and affect women. She was shot in the head by the Pakistani extremist group in retaliation for her advocacy efforts. Once she recovered (thankfully), she continued the advocacy efforts on a much greater level. She is an example of someone who showed extreme grit and advocacy especially during adversary and I really admire her for it.
What do you like about being a gwaMIT Rep? I love being a part of gwaMIT both as a department rep and an exec member because I get to work with amazing womxn from other departments and have the opportunity to be a part of the planning committees for various events organized through gwaMIT. For instance, I spearheaded the IAP movie night series along with IDM department reps - Angelica Chincaro and Amruta Killada and we had a fun time where we watch the movie "Prom". We are planning to host more such events. For the leadership conference, I got the opportunity to be the event planner and moderator for the Science and Policy: Fireside chat keynote session with Dr. Maria Zuber, and in the process, learn't a lot about event planning and organization through the gwaMIT leadership conference chair - Richa Naik. Finally, I am on the planning committee for increasing Stem opportunities for womxn in underrepresented communities and worked with Taylor Baum, another gwaMIT exec member. We partnered with Black Girls Code event where we planned a series of lab tours and sessions. In addition to the gwaMIT activities, I also serve as the C-Rep for GSC DEI and it is a great networking opportunity to meet wonderful graduate womxn at MIT.

  1. Mentorship Opportunity with HGWISE and the Harvard Biotech Club (apply now!)
Interested in mentoring undergraduate womxn at Smith College?
HGWISE and the Harvard Biotech Club are collaborating to start a new mentorship program where PhD students will be mentors to undergraduates at Smith College. This is a short survey to gauge your interest level in participating in this future program.
Here is the link to the survey and a summary of the vision and inspiration for this program<https://forms.gle/G3dusxsJSwPYNZoX6>
Getting a STEM degree college is challenging, and it can often feel like the next steps after college are ambiguous, especially when undergraduate colleges lack graduate programs. Smith is one of the largest women’s colleges in the United States, with students from 48 states and 68 countries. Unfortunately, Smith does not have STEM doctoral programs on campus and thus students lack access to learning about life as a PhD student researcher.
Thankfully, there are programs at Smith that do foster a sense of community in STEM. The AEMES (Achieving Excellence in Mathematics Engineering and Sciences) Program was built to support the success of women from historically underrepresented backgrounds in STEM-related education. In addition to peer-mentorship, this program provides funding to support paid research experiences so that fellows can perform research as their work-study job to build competitive applications for graduate school.
We are starting a chapter of mentorship within HGWISE and the Harvard Biotech Club where PhD graduate students will be mentees to Smith AEMES fellows. We are surveying your interest (as a current PhD student or member of the private sector) in being a mentor in this future program. The exact nature of your virtual mentorship meetings would be scaled to your specific needs, mentors can host a mentorship meeting ranging from monthly or bi-monthly depending on personal capacity given your other responsibilities.
In addition to the Harvard <> Smith mentorship program, will invite AEMES fellows to the virtual events hosted by Harvard graduate student organizations. These events will help undergraduates understand what the life of a STEM PhD student looks like, professional options available after getting a PhD, and attend panels from leaders across many different STEM related fields.

For more information of which organizations, see below:

Harvard x AEMES Collaboration is grounded in the partnership with the following Harvard Graduate Student organizations:
(1) Harvard Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (HGWISE),
(2) Harvard Medical School's Therapeutics Graduate Program (TGP),
(3) The Harvard Biotech Club (HBC),
