*5. Apply for Beautiful Pattern*

*What: *Teach Computational Thinking to High School Girls in Mexico
*Looking for: *Women instructors
*When: *The week of May 27, 2019
*Application deadline: *End of March 2019
*Expense: *All expense paid by sponsor

Overview video:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/ctd6Srk7Yac

Website:
http://dreamers.mit.edu

*WHY:* Computational thinking is a necessary fundamental skill for
everyone. It's as important as reading, writing, and arithmetic. The need
is evidenced by MIT's recent report on computational thinking. Obama's
*Computer
Science for All* initiative aimed to dothesamein k-12, "Our economy is
rapidly shifting, and both educators and business leaders are increasingly
recognizing that computer science (CS) is a “new basic” skill necessary for
economic opportunity and social mobility."

Unfortunately, in the developing world the access to computational thinking
education is rare. For high school young women the access is practically
non-existent.

The goal of this project is to deliver computational thinking workshops to
high school young women in Mexico. To reach young women before they make
career decisions and motivate them to consider careers in computation.

Even if they choose a different career, Computational Thinking
fundamentals, are sure to be of great value in their lives.

*Do you enjoy attending on-campus activities and meeting other students?
Are you interested in diversity issues and/or the performing arts? *

An innovative new Arts and Education project, “Creating a Community for
Women Graduate Students in STEM,” led by MIT alums, pairs the work of an
NYC-based professional theatre company with a diversity workshop. This

friendly students to foster an additional network of support for students
in the MIT community, especially with regard to diversity and inclusion.
Other key opportunities this work offers are: building an outreach profile
that is useful for future applications, such as NSF Postdoctoral
Fellowships; laying the groundwork for future programs that support women
students in STEM nationwide; interfacing with prominent leaders in
diversity and the performing arts. Students will work closely with our
team, based in NYC and Boston, to do outreach to student groups in person
and online.

Applicants must be current undergraduate or graduate students, friendly,
communication-savvy, detail-oriented, and able to work independently. STEM
majors or STEM grad students preferred. Part-time commitment of 10
hours/week starting immediately and continuing through April 19, 2019, with
possibility to extend. Hourly compensation is $15 an hour. All applicants
must submit a resume and a cover letter stating what especially interests
them about this project. Please apply via email to CCWGSProgram at gmail.com with
