Join us for a half day workshop on the importance of “intersectionality” in
STEM lead by the Anti-Racism Collaborative
<http://antiracismcollaborative.org/>!

What is intersectional feminism and what does it have to do with women in
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)? How do our multifaceted
identities influence the experience of participating in STEM fields?

This space is intentionally designed for a multi-racial, multi-gender, and
multi-generational event. Anyone interested in learning about
intersectionality in STEM and committing to action in making change is
welcome! The goal of our time together is to meet participants where they
are support them as they consider how to take action to further inclusion
in these fields.

*Who:* You (participant in a STEM-related field/industry who wants to learn
more about intersectionality in STEM).
*Why:* To build a community dedicated to creating a more inclusive STEM
culture.
*How: *Participants are required to register via enrollment form, purchase
a ticket, and complete pre-readings.

*To actually be signed up to attend you need to BOTH buy a ticket AND fill
out the registration form. *
*7. LGBT Support Group*

*Career/Skills event details*

*8. FEW Seminar: Negotiate Your Salary - Taking that First Step*

*When: *Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 5:30pm to 7:00pm
*Where:* 700 Technology Square Branch 700 Technology Square

When you received your job offer, did you negotiate for a higher salary or
accept the offer as is? Have you ever been up for a promotion at work and
asked for more money? If your answer is no, you are not alone. *It’s been
found that only 7 percent of women attempted to negotiate their salary
compared with 57 percent of men*. *Women who negotiated were able to
increase their salary by over 7 percent.*

When women negotiate they increase their potential to receive higher
salaries and better benefits packages – and those advantages add up over
time. Negotiating fair and equitable salaries can also help women become
better positioned to pay off debts such as student loans and mortgages and
save for retirement, leading to greater economic security. Which is why
we’ve invited Alexandra Howely from AAUW to help women in the MIT Community
at all stages of their careers learn to negotiate fair pay.

In this session, participants will gain confidence in their negotiation
style and learn:

   - How to identify and articulate their personal value
   - How to develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other
   negotiation strategies
   - How to conduct objective market research to benchmark a target salary
   and benefits
   - About the pay gap, including its long-term consequences

In addition to discussing salary negotiation, Alex will discuss the pay gap
and how it specifically relates to the Boston area. In 2015, the AAUW,
Mayor Walsh and the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement launched a
large-scale grassroots initiative to teach and empower 85,000 women by 2021
to confidently and successfully negotiate for salary and benefits packages
and help close the gender pay gap in Boston.

Join us as we discuss these important topics – all are welcome! Men and
women, currently employed or a student – we’re opening up this discussion
to all in the MIT Community who are interested in learning more!
