*11. GCWS Feminisms Unbound event series: Black Women and the Carceral
State *

*When:* Wednesday, September 14th, 5:30pm - 7:30pm

*Where:* MIT Building E51-095

This roundtable discussion considers the totality of the carceral state,
from the vantage point of black women’s histories, testimonies, experiences
and creative works. Black women’s fraught relationship to the state has
often existed invisibly within the intersectional axes of marginalization,
and been submerged beneath the specter of race, class, gender, and
sexuality. Three interdisciplinary scholars will gather to ponder all of
the mechanisms of the prison system, from its long historical trajectory to
literary and visual representations. The event promises to be a
far-reaching discourse on the frameworks of restriction and containment
that impact black women and the lives they attempt to control.

Roundtable participants:

Sarah Haley, Assistant Professor of Gender Studies and African American
Studies, University of California, Los Angeles

This Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and
Sexuality (GCWS) initiative, Feminisms Unbound, is an annual event series
featuring debates that focus on feminist concerns, theories, and practices
in this contemporary moment. This series is intended to foster
conversations and community among Boston-area feminist intellectuals and
activists. The series, in its open configuration, endeavors to allow the
greatest measure of engagement across multiple disciplinary trajectories,
and a full array of feminist investments.

The event organizers, who are also visiting scholars with the GCWS this
year, are Kimberly Juanita Brown, Assistant Professor of English and
Africana Studies, Mount Holyoke College, Lisa Lowe, Professor of English
and American Studies, Tufts University, and Jyoti Puri, Professor of
Sociology, Simmons College, have programmed the four events in this series.

<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/advocating-for-science-forafsmit-gsc-2016-symposium-registration-26685644481>

Please join us for the Advocating for Science Symposium and Workshop, which
will take place on-campus at MIT September 16-17, 2016. Organized by the
GSC External Affairs Board, Future of Research, and Academics for the
Future of Science, this meeting will be an opportunity for those with a
passion for advocating for science to develop their advocacy skills, meet
like-minded scientists and develop focused efforts together to effect
positive change.

The Advocating for Science Symposium on Friday 16th September 4pm-8pm will
discuss ongoing advocacy efforts to promote systemic changes within the
scientific enterprise and how it is funded. Rush Holt, former congressman
and CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, will
present the Keynote address. A reception and networking event will follow.
There is no charge to attend the Symposium.

On Saturday 17th September 9am – 6pm, we will build on this with the
Advocating for Science Workshop: an intense advocacy "boot camp" for a
focused group of participants who want to gain practical skills in
advocacy. The program will progress through the many aspects of effectively
advocating for change: from leading and inspiring a group of like-minded
individuals to collecting and using effective data, creating an overall
message, and communicating that message to the appropriate audiences.
Workshops will be run by experts in their respective fields. There is a
small fee for Workshop registration. Spaces are limited for the workshop
and accordingly we ask that all participants attend the entire day, along
with the Friday Symposium.

To register for either the Symposium or the Symposium + Workshop please go

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we
created them” - Albert Einstein

Humanity’s pursuit of progress has been boxed in by the same modes of
thought that we once used to propel it. What we need to spur revolutionary
breakthroughs is a new mode of thinking—shattering new perspectives that
break down old boundaries of thought.

We believe that innovation is the life-force of this era of change, and we
want to spark creativity in the entrepreneurs, inventors, and political
minds that will shake up tomorrow’s reality. In TEDxHarvardCollege’s 2016
Conference, you will have the opportunity to listen to
internationally-acclaimed professors, speakers, and thought leaders on how
current topics can be turned, reconsidered, and seen from an angle to
Incite Insight.

In between these talks, TEDxHarvardCollege will also be featuring
performances by the Harvard Breakers and Harvard Wushu.

Be a part of TEDxHarvardCollege, Harvard University's TEDx event, on
September 18th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at Sanders Theater.
