************** Outside MIT **************

*11. "To Be The Best": A Talk on Imposter Syndrome, Unconscious Bias, and
Stereotype Threat by Dr. Joan T. Schmelz*

*When:* Wednesday, May 4th, 5:00pm - 6:30pm

*Where:* Science Center A, Harvard College

Women (and other underrepresented groups) still struggle in their efforts
to rise to leadership positions in science and engineering. Old ideas blame
nature: girls’ brains are wired differently, so, for example, they are not
as good as boys at math. New ideas shift the blame to nurture - girls face
a powerful combination of hidden obstacles that are part of the society we
live in. This talk introduces five nurture topics that sociologists have
been studying for decades but are rarely discussed by the scientists and
engineers whose lives and careers are most seriously affected by the
findings. Studies of Unconscious Bias show that men and women both
unconsciously devalue the contributions of women. Growth Mindset is the
idea that believing in the potential for intellectual growth, in and of
itself, improves outcomes for women and girls. Stereotype Threat is the
anxiety women face in a situation where they have the potential to confirm
a negative stereotype about women as a group. Tests of Spatial Skills still
result in one of the largest and most persistent gender gaps, where boys
consistently outperform girls. Women may also face Impostor Syndrome where
they find it impossible to believe in their own competence. This talk is
not just for women. Everyone who expects to be the best, select the best,
and judge the best needs to understand how these issues skew the
competition and keep us from vying on a level playing field.

Joan Schmelz, PhD, works for Universities Space Research Association (USRA)
and currently serves as the deputy director of the Arecibo Observatory in
Puerto Rico. She was honored for her work fighting sexual harassment as one
of Nature’s top ten people who made a difference in science in 2015. She is
a professor at University of Memphis, a former program officer for the
National Science Foundation's Division of Astronomical Sciences, and the
former chair of the American Astronomical Society's Committee on the Status
of Women in Astronomy.
