Our April outing takes us on a tour of Harvard University's Arnold
Arboretum, a 281-acre research and educational institution in Jamaica
Plain. Last June its living collection consisted of approximately 14,760
accessioned plants.

Established in 1871 when the will of whaling merchant James Arnold set
aside a portion of his estate to Harvard College, the deed of trust stated
that the income of the legacy be used "for the establishment and support of
an arboretum, to be known as the Arnold Arboretum, which shall contain, as
far as practicable, all the trees [and] shrubs . . . either indigenous or
exotic, which can be raised in the open air."

Charles Sprague Sargent, the Arboretum's first director, worked tirelessly
and successfully on its behalf for 54 years. His collaboration with
Frederick Law Olmsted left its mark on the Arboretum's design, as Olmsted
laid out the paths and roadways and assigned designated areas for specific
plant groupings and Sprague arranged the plant collections.

Our guide Bart Kelso is an arborist and a storyteller. Well-acquainted with
the grounds, our tour promises to be a fascinating, colorful, and
blossoming one.

Meet us at the bottom of the steps in front of the Hunnewell Visitor
Center. *To reserve you place, contact the League office by April 22*.
Directions can be found on the Arboretum's website at
http://www.arboretum.harvard.edu. To travel with a group from MIT that day,
please make that known when you make your reservation.

an initial meeting. No more passive business card exchanges, participants
at this workshop will learn modern techniques for building and expanding

modern products and services for organizations with virtual teams and
remote professionals. Mari Anne has experienced first-hand the critical
power of a well-cultivated network and she is a strong advocate of
investing time and effort to build and maintain one for long term career
success.
