********** GW at MIT **********

1. Join Title IX working group!

We are looking for two GWAMIT representatives on the Title IX working group. Please see the below announcement from Sarah Rankin, Title IX Coordinator, and email lisik at mit.edu if interested or for more information.

Over the past year, the Institute has worked to introduce a number of new initiatives to address sexual misconduct at MIT. Among those initiatives is a revised Sexual Misconduct Policy, http://sexualmisconduct.mit.edu, designated Title IX Coordinators throughout the Institute, and the creation of my position, Title IX Investigator, dedicated to investigating allegations of misconduct and developing educational efforts.

In this new role, I feel it is important to include students in guiding our Title IX outreach efforts and educational initiatives. To that end, I am writing to invite you to participate in a new Title IX Student Working Group. To give you an idea of the group’s focus, the following is a sample of possible topics:

· assist in creating educational messages and material related to Title IX and Sexual Misconduct;

· provide advice on the best way to reach students and disseminate information;

· think through “big picture” issues such as assessing the campus climate;

· create tools to better assess unique issues affecting undergraduate and graduate students (focus groups, surveys, etc.)

I would be grateful if you would consider joining this working group. I anticipate the time commitment will be a bi-monthly meeting with some sub-committee work as needed. I hope to finalize the membership by the end of this term and anticipate our first meeting will be the last week of January, 2014.

he Graduate Consortium in Women’s Studies at MIT invites you to a film screening of Anita: Speaking Truth to Power on Wednesday November 5, 7 pm, at MIT Building 4 Room 370.

The film screening of Anita (2013) will be followed by a panel discussion featuring: Dr. Evelynn Hammonds, Professor of the History of Science and African and African American Studies at Harvard University, and Leena Akhtar, Doctoral Candidate, History of Science, Harvard University.

About Anita (2013)

"Anita Hill's graphic testimony was a turning point for gender equality in the U.S. and ignited a political firestorm about sexual misconduct and power in the workplace that resonates still today. She has become an American icon, empowering millions of women and men around the world to stand up for equality and justice.

Against a backdrop of sex, politics, and race, ANITA reveals the intimate story of a woman who spoke truth to power. Directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Freida Mock, the film is both a celebration of Anita Hill's legacy and a rare glimpse into her private life with friends and family, many of whom were by her side that fateful day 22 years ago. Anita Hill courageously speaks openly and intimately for the first time about her experiences that led her to testify before the Senate and the obstacles she faced in simply telling the truth. She also candidly discusses what happened to her life and work in the 22 years since." - Read more on the film website.

All events are free and open to the public. This public event is hosted in conjunction with the Graduate Consortium in Women’s Studies' Fall 2014 course Gender, Health, and Marginalization taught by the GCWS faculty team Norma Meras Swenson, Chris Bobel, and Silvia Domínguez.

6. Life in the Age of the App: Move Beyond Burnout and Create a Career You Love
When: Thursday, November 6, 1:00-2:00
Where: 1-190

You're smart, motivated, and hungry to make an impact on the world. But at times, the pressure of where you're heading after graduation and how to get there can feel unrelenting. When given the choice, should you put in another hour studying for finals, try to land a killer internship, take a much-needed social break or catch up on sleep? The answer isn't always cut and dry; the pressure to succeed can weigh heavily, and you fear making a "wrong" move. In this workshop you'll learn from Millennial expert and bestselling author, Jenny Blake, a new approach to career-building that will allow you to create a customizable, sustainable, dynamic career that you love -- whether you're still in school or preparing for life after graduation. Rather than think of your education and career linearly, like a ladder, you'll learn how to embrace life as a smart phone: fully customizable to your skills and interests. Sponsored by GECD, MIT Work Life Center, and Google. All GECD events are open to MIT undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and alumni. Advanced registration requested via CareerBridge: https://www.myinterfase.com/mit/student

7. Girls Day @the MIT Museum
When: November 8, 12pm-4pm
Where: MIT Museum

The Museum has invited Girl Scouts in the eastern Massachusetts region to participate in holography workshops which our Museum Educators will teach during the day. From noon until 4pm we have invited organizations to facilitate hands-on demonstration and activities. We would love if your organization could volunteer and organize an activity for the day.

Last year we had more than 100 girls attend the both days during November and May. It would be great if we could have representations of women in science and engineering from around campus. Please let me know if your group would be willing to volunteer time during the day.
