3. The 2014 GWAMIT Spring Empowerment Conference

Graduate Women at MIT (GWAMIT) is pleased to present the annual GWAMIT Empowerment Conference, to be held at MIT from April 10 - 17, 2014. This year's conference features an opening keynote by Debora Spar, President of Barnard College and author of “Wonder Women: sex, power, and the quest for perfection”, a closing keynote entitled "Playing the game or hacking the system: A talk and discussion on subverting systems of power" by Ruha Benjamin, as well as two other exciting events.

Registration is now open! Come to any or all of our Empowerment Conference events at no cost! Please refer to the conference website for details about the events and links for registration. Michele King from Career Development at MIT will present a workshop on skills and your career. At this session, you will identify where you are within the career development process, identify transferable and self-management skills, and identify next steps that you may take to continue your own career development and job search. Attending this session will help you strengthen your ability to communicate your skills and accomplishments, as well help you prioritize the next steps you need to take in your job search.

5. [Spouses&Partners] Dispelling Myths about Libido
When: Wednesday, April 2nd, 3-5pm
Where: Eastgate Penthouse

Kate McCarthy, MIT's sexpert, will lead a discussion one of the most mysterious aspects of sexuality - libido. We'll talk about the anatomy of desire, how to communicate your needs, and our expectations and assumptions about our partners. Feel free to email any questions you may have before the talk to kmcc at med.mit.edu <http://kmcc@med.mit.edu%20/> so that she may answer them anonymously during the meeting.

The Scientista Foundation will be hosting its first-ever research symposium for women in science. The Scientista Intercollegiate Research
Symposium is a one-day event that brings female graduate and undergraduate students together from across the country to listen to inspirational talks, including a keynote from science celebrity, Elise Andrew, creator of the 10 MILLION fanned Facebook page.

If you are a graduate student in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or Math interested in serving as abstract judges complete the sign-up form below

9. AeroAstro Centennial Seminar Series: General Janet Wolfenbarger
When: Wednesday, April 16th, 10am

The year 2014 marks 100 years of aerospace studies at the Institute, and the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is celebrating through a Centennial Seminar Series.

The first speaker will be General Janet Wolfenbarger, a Course 16 alum and Commander of the Air Force Materiel Command. You can find her biography at http://1.usa.gov/1gsiXQl.

Breakfast available prior to the talk.

10. Cambridge Science Festival @MIT museum
When: April 19th-27th
Where: MIT museum

Throughout the Cambridge Science Festival, the MIT Museum in collaboration with the City of Cambridge, community organizations, schools, universities, and businesses hosts a range of performances, discussions, and workshops and activities.  Some of the events will focus on Space Day, Printing 3D Ships, and Science You Can Eat.

Admission throughout the festival is $10.00/adult and $5.00/youth, students, and seniors.

11. MIT Chancellor – Listening lunches
When: Monday, May 19th

Chancellor Barnhart will be hosting a series of intimate listening sessions that will help the MIT community understand how sexual assault happens here and what we can do to respond to and prevent these instances. Information shared will help to shape the recommendations and policy regarding sexual assault in our community. All experiences and backgrounds are valuable in this conversation, and there will be support from Violence Prevention & Response on hand for anyone who may need it.

At this careers panel, we will be joined by several talented scientists who have founded or are working at local start ups. The panel discussion will last for 45 minutes, and afterwards we'll have the opportunity to chat with the panelists at a catered reception.

Kathryn Kosuda: VP of Research & Development of Vaxess Technologies,a life sciences company developing novel heat-stable vaccine formulations.
Mary Lynne Hedley: Director, President, Chief Scientific Officer, and Co-founder of TESARO a biotechnology company focused on oncology therapeutics.
Analisa Russo: Director of STEM Outreach and Product Development at Electroninks Incorporated. Russo is the inventor of Circuit Scribe, a rollerball pen that writes with conductive silver ink and is used for circuit prototyping and education.
Jo Wightman: Senior Director of Product Management at Fiksu, a mobile app marketing startup based in Boston.

13. Call for proposals: 2014 Fuller Challange for socially responsible design!

The Buckminster Fuller Institute formally announces the Call for Proposals http://bit.ly/OPpOgT to the 2014 Fuller Challenge. Recognized as "Socially-Responsible Design's Highest Award", the Challenge invites activists, architects, artists, designers, entrepreneurs, students and planners from all over the world to submit their innovative solutions to some of humanity's most pressing problems. A $100,000 prize is awarded to support the development and implementation of one outstanding strategy. Entries will be accepted until April 11, 2014.

14. Women Empowered in STEM 2014 - weSTEM

The 2014 weSTEM conference will contain two keynote lectures, dual-track session talks, break-out discussion forums, and social networking sessions. The event is open to female graduate students around the country.

Financial support to attend weSTEM 2014 will be offered to up to 20 students. Funding decisions will be made based on the application for attendance, available at http://bit.ly/1fiMNGQ.

All students (undergraduate and graduate) in STEM programs are invited to apply.

15. [MASS AWIS] Alternative Careers in Science - Speed Networking Event
When: Tuesday, April 22nd, 6-9pm

This event is for men and women within the scientific community (from undergrads to early career levels) who are interested in exploring diverse career options in science.

Participants will have the opportunity to interact with 10-15 experienced individuals who will give insight into their chosen professions. The event will be held in a speed-networking fashion with participants switching tables every 15 minutes for a total of 5 sessions. Please, note this is not a career fair.

The main career areas will be consulting, patent law, research & development, technology transfer, publishing/medical writing, academia, business development, competitive intelligence, teaching, medical science liaison, sales and human resources.

General Admission $30, MASS AWIS members $15.

16. Sense About Science – applications for Ask for Evidence Workshop
When: Wednesday, April 23rd, 5:30pm
Where: Emerson College, Boston

Do you think it is important for good science and evidence to be communicated to the public? What can be done to address scientific misconceptions and misinformation? Journalists and scientists will share insights on working with the media.We will share case studies and experiences of people Asking for Evidence behind claims in policy, media and advertising.

This free evening event runs from 5.30 to 7.30pm and includes pizza served in the break. It's open to everyone: the public, students, communicators, early career researchers, scientists, engineers and medics.
