Science Saturdays is a weekend program designed to bring fun science activities and demonstrations to libraries throughout Boston. From building electric motors to holding miniature "crime scene" investigations, Science Saturdays accommodates a wide range of topics through lots of science fun.

Organized in a booth-style, students are welcome to explore any of the activity booths and find out what is most interesting to them. Young scientists are able to discover the wonders of science in an informal setting that is fun and educational!

HGWISE is proud of to host a coffee hour discussion with the Dean of SEAS, Cherry Murray! Previous to her current position, Murray served as principal associate director for science and technology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 2004-2009 and was president of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2009.

Before joining Lawrence Livermore, Murray was Senior Vice President of Physical Sciences and Wireless Research after a 27 year long career at Bell Laboratories Research. She served as a member of the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling and is currently serving on the DOE Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. She received her B.S. in 1973 and her Ph.D. in physics in 1978 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Harvard Square Business Association is excited to announce the 8th Annual Chinese New Year Celebration in Harvard Square. The pageantry begins at 1:00pm on Sunday, February 23rd in historic Winthrop Park with a lion dance around the ancient oak tree.

Immediately following the dance, parade with us through Harvard Square as we pass red and gold silk lanterns festooning the wrought iron lampposts on Massachusetts Avenue, and onward to our final destination, The Hong Kong Restaurant. The Hong Kong, a venerable Harvard Square institution since 1954, opens its doors and welcomes the public for an afternoon of food, art and music. The seminar focuses on the transition from technical roles to leadership positions. Dr. Gwen Acton will explain the fundamental differences between individual contributors and leader/managers; show how to be effective leaders; and teach how to acquire effective skills for managing the others.

Dr. Gwen Acton is an expert on strategic leadership at the intersection of science and business. She is CEO of Vivo Group, and she has previously served as the Director of Scientific Development at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and as a faculty member at Harvard University in the department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Dr. Acton is a popular speaker, workshop presenter, and facilitator.
