Are you considering a career in academia? The Office of the Dean of Graduate Education is pleased to announce the opening of this year’s application to our Path of Professorship workshop. This workshop is designed to provide graduate and post-doctoral women with information about academic careers in science and engineering fields and the application process.

Path of Professorship will run from Friday, November 15th at 1pm through Saturday, November 16th at 5pm, and cover topics ranging from “What Institution is Right for You?” to “The Tenure Process.” Each year we are able to gather a wonderful group of female professors from MIT and beyond to talk about their experiences in academia. 4. Women Lead: A Career Discussion on the Future of Leadership (Tues. Oct. 15, 7pm)

Women Lead is an interactive discussion on leadership in today’s diverse, rapidly changing workplace. Participants will learn: why women are well-positioned to be our current and future leaders, why women leaders will lead the future of work, how younger women are driving new leadership in the modern workplace, why gender matters less and quality of leadership means more, what skills and attributes will help future leaders stay more competitive, and what steps women (and men) can take to become more innovative leaders.

During the event, Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti will share the latest research on women leaders, by highlighting key ﬁndings from the new book, “Women Lead: Career Perspectives from Workplace Leaders.”

5. “Women in Academia” Panel Discussion (Wed. Oct. 16, 5-7pm)

This Wednesday October 16, UWIP will host an interdisciplinary panel of MIT leaders, held in honour of Professor Dresselhaus's contributions to women and junior faculty. Listen to Professors Susan Hockfield, Barbara Liskov, Paola Cappellaro and Molly Potter share their insights on women in academia.

The panel will be moderated by Prof. Edmund Bertschinger, the Institute Community and Equity Chair. This is your chance to have any questions answered by distinguished women faculty at MIT. Refreshments and a reception with the panelists will follow the discussion and Q&A session. The event will be held in 10-250 on October 16. Contact uwip-exec at mit.edu for more information.

6. Apply for a Graduate Student Life Grant (Apply by Fri. Oct. 18)

The Graduate Student Life Grants program is a request-for-proposal process inviting graduate students, spouses, faculty, or staff to submit creative, community building ideas for possible funding. We encourage you to apply for funds - especially in collaboration with other students or student groups. Proposals may address a specific constituency such as families; they may cross departments or focus within a discipline; they may target several residence halls, or a variety of student groups. Their purpose should be to explore the role and relevance of community in creating a more balanced and fulfilling graduate experience.

Previous successful grants include Weekly Wednesdays at the Muddy Charles, Greek Cooking Class, Science Policy Bootcamp, the FamilyNet website, and "An Evening with Tom Chapin." The application deadline is midnight on Friday, October 18, 2013. Proposal authors will have the opportunity to answer any questions from the selection panel; funds will be released after December 6, 2013.

7. Join the MIT Women's Initiative (Apply by Sun. Oct. 20, 11:59pm)

The MIT Women's Initiative is a group that sends pairs of female engineers, both graduate and undergraduate (sophomores and older), from MIT to middle and high schools around the country for a week during IAP.

They give presentations about opportunities in engineering, conduct hands-on activities, and encourage high school girls to remain interested in math and science. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy established a Presidential Commission to examine and report on the status of American women. The Commission, chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt from its beginning until her death in 1962, published its report in October 1963. The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University are partnering to host a two-day, dual-site conference to mark this important historical milestone and to reflect on the status of American women 50 years later.

On Monday, October 14, join Allida Black, Eleanor Clift, Sue Cobble, Jill Ker Conway, Ellen Fitzpatrick, Sandra Fluke, Aileen Hernandez, Tracy Roosevelt, and Hilda Solis for “The 50th Anniversary of the Presidential Report on American Women,” an afternoon conference and discussion at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

MITRE's Young Women in Engineering Day is a one-day workshop sponsored by the MITRE Corporation in Bedford, MA to help young women learn about careers in Engineering, Science and Technology. The workshop is open to female high school students who live in the general proximity of MITRE's Bedford headquarters. Workshop attendees will meet and talk with female engineers and experience hands-on interactive demonstrations of the work that we do at MITRE. Plenty of time is planned for one-on-one discussions and questions. Lunch will be provided.

Maybe you have also felt the social pressure to speak up in lab, to be "loud" when socializing with peers, or to impress people on the future job market. Maybe you find that even harder in the presence of aggressive people or in an unfamiliar cultural environment. In this workshop, we will explore how one may practice assertiveness to increase personal effectiveness in communication, and to show respect to yourself as well as others.

The workshop will provide a confidential, supportive setting in which women scientists can discuss concerns and share experiences, surrounding the challenges of asking questions, voicing concerns and being heard. We would be joined by Dr. Sheila Thomas, who will share with us her perspectives as the GSAS Dean for Diversity and Minority Affairs - in addition to being a faculty at the Medical School and an experienced mentor of graduate students.
