The Lemelson-MIT Awards honor both established and rising inventors for
their ingenuity, creativity and contribution to invention and innovation.
The awards recognize the profound impact that inventors can have on
economic and social well-being. The $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Student
Prize honors promising young inventors studying at MIT.

The student prize is awarded annually to an MIT senior or graduate student
who has created or improved a product or process, applied a technology in a
new way, redesigned a system, or in other ways displayed a portfolio of
inventiveness. Award winners gain invaluable exposure to the science,
business and investment communities through national press around this
award.

Past winners include Alice Chen for her invention in tissue engineering
human liver cells in mice, Miles Barr for his fabrication of solar cells on
every day substrates, like paper, Geoff von Maltzahn for developing
therapeutics to fight cancer, Carl Dietrich for developing the Transition,
a Personal Air Vehicle, and Amy Smith for inventing low-tech devices for

It’s the time of year when AMITA reaches out to the women of MIT to offer
the opportunity to connect with a diverse and talented group of alumnae – a
group of women of all ages that seeks to mentor, coach, and support fellow
MIT women in their professional and personal lives, and work together on
activities and events to improve the MIT experience for women. And just as
important, AMITA’s social events are an opportunity to meet other MIT women
