Please come out and volunteer to help welcome new first year women grad
students to MIT and GWAMIT at the annual Orientation Women's Welcome Lunch!
We need members for set-up and take-down tasks, and to represent GWAMIT and
talk to first year students over lunch. If you plan to attend you *must* sign
up, as we need to ensure enough food and chairs.

*2. GWAMIT Advocacy Data Analysis/Researcher Position Opening (Statement of
Interest due Sep. 14)*

The GWAMIT Advocacy Team is looking for a researcher to help with data
analysis regarding women enrollment across departments at MIT.  The
position involves meetings with the Advocacy Co-chairs and working to
analyze data alongside 2 existing team members for approximately 3-5
hours/week. The data will be used for internal purposes to guide future
GWAMIT programming.


Interested applicants are requested to contact Kay (kfurman at mit.edu) and
Vinita (vinita at mit.edu) with a statement of interest by September 14th.

*3. [SPI] Beyond the Lab: The Intersection of Science and Policy at MIT

Come learn about the role policy plays in the science performed here at MIT
as well as the role science plays in informing public policy.

Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Science Susan Solomon,
Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering Scott Kemp, and
Associate Provost and Professor of History Philip Khoury

Panelists will speak about their own involvement in policy issues as
scientists and the variety of opportunities to get involved in science
policy here at MIT.  Additionally, the MIT Science Policy Initiative, a
student run organization, will discuss ways students have been and can be
involved in science policy during their graduate careers.

Synopsis: London, 1880. Mortimer Granville, a dedicated and
forward-thinking young doctor, is struggling to establish his career. While
Granville preaches sanitation and germ theory, the old guard of doctors
clinging to leeches and hacksaws, scoff at his upstart ideas, and show him
the door. Granville’s fortunes change when he arrives for an interview at
the well-appointed private offices of Dr. Dalrymple, London’s leading
specialist in women’s medicine.

In an age of invention, Dr. Granville set out to find a medical cure for
what ails women...and accidentally electrified our love lives forever.
HYSTERIA is a lighthearted romantic comedy that tells the story of the
birth of the electro-mechanical vibrator at the very peak of Victorian
prudishness.

*5. Application for the 2013 $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize
(Application opens Wed. Sep. 5)*

The Lemelson-MIT Awards honor both established and rising inventors for
their ingenuity, creativity and contribution to invention and innovation.
The awards recognize the profound impact that inventors can have on
economic and social well-being. The $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize honors
promising young inventors studying at MIT.


The student prize is awarded annually to an MIT senior or graduate student
who has created or improved a product or process, applied a technology in a
new way, redesigned a system, or in other ways displayed a portfolio of
inventiveness. Award winners gain invaluable exposure to the science,
business and investment communities through national press around this
award.


Past winners include Alice Chen for her invention in tissue engineering
human liver cells in mice, Miles Barr for his fabrication of solar cells on
every day substrates, like paper, Geoff von Maltzahn for developing
therapeutics to fight cancer, Carl Dietrich for developing the Transition,
a Personal Air Vehicle, and Amy Smith for inventing low-tech devices for
addressing problems in developing countries.

Each year, we look for volunteers to handle certain tasks at the fair, and
students receive free t-shirts and an opportunity to meet employers on a
more personal basis. This year, we are adding an additional bonus: an
exclusive volunteers-only networking event, which will feature around 100
company representatives and hors d'oeurves/beverages.

important, AMITA’s social events are an opportunity to meet other MIT women

Founded in 1899, the Association of MIT Alumnae is dedicated to providing a

Sherri Malouf, President and Master Trainer of Situation Management System,
Inc., developers of the Positive Power and Influence Program, will be
leading the engaging, fun and experiential learning session "Influencing
without Authority.

Sherri is entrepreneurial, a seasoned professional trainer and consultant
with over thirty years of experience. She is highly effective working with
different levels of people in a variety of industries.  Sherri has
delivered training programs and coached individuals in both the public and
private sector in the areas of influence negotiation, leadership and team
building.

During the session, you will:

   -  Participate in an exercise to experience influence energy and learn
   more about the Situational Influence Model.
   -  Practice the different ways to positively influence people.
   -  Learn how to handle unproductive or stressful interactions.

In preparation for the meeting, please think about a challenging influence
situation, as you will apply the influence styles to thinking through how
to deal with this situation more effectively.

We welcome Anke Sparmann, editor at "The EMBO Journal" who will gives us
look behind the scenes of the publication process at the "The EMBO Journal."

The talk will provide insights into

   - how a manuscript is processed after it is submitted to the journal
   - the editorial perspective on a scientific paper
   - the criteria by which editors reach decisions
   - our efforts to make the peer review process as transparent and fair as
   possible


Anke Sparmann is a professional editor at "The EMBO Journal," with a
background in signal transduction and chromatin & transcription. During her
post-doctoral work, completed before her move to publishing, she focused on
analyzing dynamic changes of Polycomb-complex composition during neural
stem cell differentiation in the group of Maarten van Lohuizen at the
Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) in Amsterdam. Anke obtained her PhD for
her study on the role of Ras-induced Interleukin-8 expression in tumor
growth and angiogenesis in the laboratory of Dafna Bar-Sagi at the
State University
of New York at Stony Brook, USA.

16, 2012 for travel that starts between December 1, 2012 and April 30, 2013.
