The GWAMIT Empowerment Conference is on for Spring 2012~!  Join the planning
committee at any level to help plan the conference - lead an event, chair
logistics or advertising, or help run an ongoing event.  Bring your ideas
and contact the Chairs (mvartak at mit.edu, luyao at mit.edu) to get involved -
even if you can't make today's meeting.

 

 

2. Collaborative Events Planning Team Mtg (Tomorrow, Nov 16, 6-7pm)

The GWAMIT Collaborative Events Team is having its first meeting to
brainstorm one-time events with outside speakers or in collaboration with
existing groups.  Past events have included joint events with
undergraduates, Harvard grad women, and more!  Come to share your ideas and
learn more about the many ways to get involved!

Want to help shape the future of GWAMIT?  Or help the organization's
membership, funding, publicity, or advocacy operations?

Then get involved in the GWAMIT Executive Board!  Positions range from
running meetings and planning events to collecting data on our members,
fundraising, and branding.

January 14th!

4. "Miss Representation" Screening (Mon. Nov 21, 7-9p)

When: Monday, November 21, Screening starts at 7pm, doors open at 6:30pm

GWAMIT and WGS are very excited to announce that MIT will host a screening
of the documentary Miss Representation! This is a film that that explores
how the media's misrepresentation of women has led to the
under-representation of women in positions of power and influence. 

 

The film premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and has been
showing at sold-out screenings around the country. There will be a screening
and short moderated discussion afterwards about the film. People from within
and outside the MIT community are invited to attend. Free and open to the
public.

discussion on Entrepreneurship in Clean Tech.  Come hear successful women
entrepreneurs and venture capitalists talk about their experiences in the
clean tech startup space. The discussion will touch upon industry-specific
issues such as funding, market research, technology development, and
regulatory constraints.

6. [Harvard] The Transition from Science to Policy: A discussion with Former
AAAS Fellow David Hewitt (Fri, Nov 18, 5-6p)

When: Fri, Nov 18, 5 - 6 pm
Where: Northwest Labs 453

If you're interested in trying out a career in science policy, the AAAS
offers hundreds of 1-2 year, well-paid fellowships for new PhD Students to
work in a variety of government agencies and offices as science policy
advisors. Join us for a happy hour discussion with OEB PhD graduate, and
former AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow David Hewitt, who will talk
about his journey from science PhD to non-profit science and education
outreach, science policy, and
consulting. A true renaissance man, David does all this while still
conducting science research and teaching at University of Pennsylvania. This
event is being hosted by the Harvard Graduate Science Policy Group.

 

 

7. Women Mentors Needed for More Active Girls in Computing (MAGIC) Program

You may have heard that a group of senior women engineers kicked off an
organization called MAGIC (More Active Girls in  Computing) at the 2007
Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. Since then, MAGIC has
offered 1-1 mentoring to middle and high school girls in four different
schools, with an objective of exposing these girls to various Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas and careers.

MAGIC mentors have included women with successful STEM careers from Google,
IBM, JASnet, McKinsey, NASA, Oracle, Rutgers University, Santa Clara
University, Stanford University, and University of Massachusetts, We will be
entering our fourth year of mentoring in the fall of 2011.

team in entrepreneurship
