Nancy Hopkins, the Amgen, Inc. Professor of Biology at MIT works in the
Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research within the Biology
Department. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow
of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Institute
of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and has served on its
Council.

In addition to her scientific work, in 1995 she was appointed Chair of the
first Committee on Women Faculty in the School of Science at MIT. In 1999,
a summary of the findings of her committee was published in the MIT faculty
newsletter. This influential and widely read article came to be known as
the MIT Report on Women in Science. The MIT Report, endorsed by then-MIT
President Charles Vest and then-Dean of Science (now Chancellor at
Berkeley) Robert Birgeneau, is credited with launching a national
re-examination of equity for women scientists. This report also led 9
research universities, including MIT, to form an ongoing collaboration to
study and address issues of gender equity. The group, which came to be
known as "The MIT-9", includes Harvard, Stanford, California Institute of
Technology, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan,
Yale, and Berkeley. In 2000, Nancy Hopkins was appointed Co-Chair (with
Robert A. Brown, now President of BU) of the first Council on Faculty
Diversity at MIT.

Professor Hopkins will be introduced by Boston University President Robert
A. Brown. ThE is event is free and open to the public. A reception will
follow. Sponsored
by Boston University ‘s Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program and
the Office of the University Provost. Email wgs at bu.edu for more information.

*Speakers:* Masha Hareli, PhD, President of AWIS Massachusetts Chapter\
Agenda:

*This program is provided courtesy of a three-year grant from the Elsevier
Foundation.

Given the work environments and expectations for individuals in science,
and the fact that a career in science is very often a way of life and far
more than a job, work-life balance satisfaction can be elusive. While
advocating for change in policies and systems continues to be important,
women must find the personal work-life balance strategies that work for
them within the systems in which they work. This interactive program will
help participants:
Define for themselves what work-life satisfaction is and is not
Understand how incongruence between priorities and actions can drain energy
and negatively impact work-life satisfaction
Examine how their current choices impact work-life balance and identify
changes that will have the biggest impact on personal and professional
satisfaction
Identify 7 keys to achieving and maintaining work-life satisfaction
Craft a personalized plan to improve work-life balance satisfaction

*7. [Harvard] The Transition from Science to Policy: A discussion with
Former AAAS Fellow David Hewitt (Fri, Nov 18, 5-6p)*
*When:* Fri, Nov 18, 5 - 6 pm
*Where:* Northwest Labs 453

If you're interested in trying out a career in science policy, the AAAS
offers hundreds of 1-2 year, well-paid fellowships for new PhD Students to
work in a variety of government agencies and offices as science policy
advisors. Join us for a happy hour discussion with OEB PhD graduate, and
former AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow David Hewitt, who will
talk about his journey from science PhD to non-profit science and education
outreach, science policy, and
consulting. A true renaissance man, David does all this while still
conducting science research and teaching at University of Pennsylvania.
This event is being hosted by the Harvard Graduate Science Policy Group.

*8. Women Mentors Needed for More Active Girls in Computing (MAGIC) Program*
You may have heard that a group of senior women engineers kicked off
an organization called MAGIC (More Active Girls in Computing) at the 2007
Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. Since then, MAGIC has
offered 1-1 mentoring to middle and high school girls in four different
schools, with an objective of exposing these girls to various Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas and careers.

MAGIC mentors have included women with successful STEM careers from Google,
IBM, JASnet, McKinsey, NASA, Oracle, Rutgers University, Santa Clara
University, Stanford University, and University of Massachusetts, We will
be entering our fourth year of mentoring in the fall of 2011.
