*When:* Monday, February 28 5:30-6:30p
*Where:* 2-139
*Speaker: *Christina Sormani (CUNY GC and Lehman College)
*Title:* An Almost Isotropic Universe

In the Friedmann model of the universe, cosmologists assume that the
spacelike universe has constant sectional curvature: so that it is either
Euclidean, Spherical or Hyperbolic or a related space called a Space Form.
Such spaces all have a Law of Cosines in which the length of the third side
of a triange is determined by two legs and the angle between them. This
assumption is "justified" by saying that locally the universe is isotropic
(looks the same under rotation) by Schur's Theorem. However, the universe is
not exactly isotropic due to the fact that matter is not distributed
uniformly.

(This lecture series is intended for an advanced undergraduate or beginning
graduate student audience. There will be pizza available after each talk.
Mathematicians of all levels, areas, and genders are welcome!)

after this place?

SECOND Annual Mujeres Latinas Conference: Wills and Wants, Que Queremos?

As MIT students, "What we want?" can be a difficult question to answer.
Listen to our guests talk about their experiences as undergraduate students,
industry professionals, and graduate students. Discussions will range from
panel sessions to smaller group conversations.

All are welcome to attend! RSVP at our website:

On March 5, AMITA invites you to celebrate the diverse accomplishments of
MIT alumnae, the women who have followed in the footsteps of Ellen Swallow
Richards (ESR,1873). Join us for an exciting day connecting with alumnae,
including some of our pioneers and stars. Our speakers will highlight how
alumnae have met the challenges of changing times and left their mark. Our
foremothers a century ago fought for entrance to the professions and for
suffrage. Alumnae today continue to contribute to progress in the workplace,
family, social and market revolutions of the last 60 years.

7. Student Health Advisory Committee
Contact:* Brian Spatocco spatocco@*mit*.edu <spatocks at gmail.com>

The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) which was formed by graduate
students several years back in response to rising insurance costs. Since
then, however, graduate student participation has waned to zero
representation and we are now working on trying to fill up some slots for
this group. Essentially, they work from 1,000 feet up and think about/make
recommendations on institute-wide policy for MIT Medical. The SHAC thinks
much more broadly about ways MIT Medical can best meet evolving student
needs. There are currently several undergrads, and perhaps three to four
graduate student slots open.

Please let Brian Spatocco (spatocco@*mit*.edu <spatocks at gmail.com> know if
you are interested.

*8. MMBA Mentors Needed*
*Note:* Not just for Business students
*Contact:* Michael Thompson 08thompsonm at gmail.com

My name is Michael Thompson and I am the Programs Chair for the MIT Minority
Business Association. Our organization will be having a mentorship program
for MIT students. We are currently looking for a few more mentors for our
program, and were wondering if you would interested in participating.
The MMBA Mentorship program consists of:

-Monthly 1 on 1 meetings with your mentee for lunch, coffee, etc.
-End-ff event 5/8/10

The main goal for our program is to equip each mentee with the tools
necessary to receive an summer internship or summer UROP offer. At our
kick-off event we will provide each mentor with some discussions topics so
that the 1 on 1 meetings are as productive as possible.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Thanks!
Michael Thompson*
