1. Register for the Path of Professorship Workshop 

Graduate women students in science and engineering who are within 2 years of PhD completion and are considering a faculty career are invited to register now for Path of Professorship which will be held on October 22rd and 23th. This 1.5 day workshop will focus on skills, strategies and "insider information" necessary to succeed in securing a faculty position, negotiating the tenure track, and advancing to other leadership positions. More than 25 women faculty speakers  will share their wisdom, insights and advice.

Please note that space is limited, and there has been a wait list each year, so aspiring participants are encouraged to register immediately.  A small number of seats will be held for postdoctoral women referred by their departments.

NOTE: All meals are provided. Professor Gilda Barabino of Georgia Tech will be the guest speaker at dinner on Friday. 

 

2. Burroughs Wellcome Fund is accepting applications for their Collaborative Research Travel Grant

Application Deadline:  December 1, 2010 by 4:00 p.m. Eastern

This program provides up to $15,000 in support for researchers from degree-granting institutions to travel either domestically or internationally to a laboratory to acquire a new research technique, to facilitate/begin collaboration, or to attend a course.  Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or are studying for a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, or engineering who are interested in investigating research opportunities in the biological sciences or to biologists interested in working with physical scientists, mathematicians, engineers, chemists, statisticians, or computer scientists to incorporate their ideas and approaches to answering biological questions.

3. The Student Explorer Grant is now accepting applications

The Innovation Centre will offer student focused grants called the “Explorer Grant” to assist individual students or student groups, with their faculty mentor, explore further development and commercialization of innovative work originated by the student(s).  The Explorer Grant will provide up to $50,000 in funding to develop commercial prototypes, evaluate go-to-market strategies and de-risk the project so that it can be licensed to an existing company or form the basis of a start-up company.  By increasing connectivity with the Singapore and international venture community, the Innovation Centre will provide business expertise and networking opportunities to the students.

The student grant proposals must be submitted electronically to explorergrants at smart.mit.edu by 15 November 2010 before 5pm Singapore time.

4. Active Mind's National Day Without Stigma: Free Dinner

When: Monday, October 4, 4:30-6 pm

Where: Coffeehouse (W20 3rd floor)

Take a break to eat dinner from Subways or brain-food snacks and meet your clinicians! Monday, October 4th is Active Mind's National Day Without Stigma, so clinicians from MIT's mental health will be visiting the Coffeehouse (W20 3rd floor) to chit chat and introduce themselves. Come to grab some food and ask any questions you want, learn what it's like to work at MIT Medical, or just chat. This event is laid-back and  informal.

About AM:
Active Minds at MIT utilizes peer to peer outreach to increase students' awareness of mental health issues as well as to de-stigmatize discussion about topics related to mental illness and its symptoms. AM also serves to help communicate available resources to the student body.

 
5. Networking Online - Making Social Media Work For You (webinar)

6. How to Ace the Consulting Case Study Interview

Stroud Consulting will share some tips and insights into the consulting case interviews. Students will get an understanding of the different types of interviews that consulting companies use to evaluate candidates and will get to participate in some practice cases.

8. U.S. Job Search for International Students

Come learn how you, as an international student looking for a job in the US, can develop and enhance your job search and interviewing skills. This session will focus specifically on challenges many international students may face when searching for a job and interviewing.
