1. Anita Borg Institute's Scholarships to Attend the 2010 Grace Hopper  
Celebration of Women in Computing



Deadline:  May 14, 2010



The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology has announced that  
scholarship applications are being accepted for the 2010 Grace Hopper  
Celebration of Women in Computing Conference.



This year's conference, September 28 - October 2, 2010, in Atlanta,  
Georgia, will feature keynote speakers, plenary sessions, over a  
hundred panels, a poster session, and workshops led by successful  
researchers and professionals in the computer science industry.



With support from the National Science Foundation and other funders,  
full scholarships cover conference registration, lodging for four  
nights, and travel expense reimbursement. (Partial scholarships are  
also available.) While the largest portion of scholarships are awarded  
to undergraduate and graduate students, junior faculty and members of  
nongovernmental organizations and nonprofits are also eligible to  
apply. International students and women from smaller schools, diverse  
backgrounds, and education are encouraged to apply. Scholarship  
criteria include academic achievement, potential in the field, and need.

2. Mentoring Fair

When: Monday, April 12, 12 – 2 pm

Where: Walker Memorial, Morss Hall



The Committee on Race and Diversity is planning a Mentoring Fair to  
highlight the many types of successful formal mentoring programs on  
campus. We also hope to connect potential mentees with mentors during  
the fair.



Tables/booths will be grouped by categories:

- Undergraduate Mentoring

- Graduate Student and Post Doc Mentoring

- Staff Mentoring

- Faculty Mentoring



Refreshments will be served.



3. Personal Finance Workshop

When: Tuesday, April 13, 7 – 8:30 pm

Now that you have found your summer internship, it's time to start  
thinking about managing your finances! Come to this event to learn  
about basic personal finance. The presentation will aim to provide an  
introduction and overview on how to invest, save, and budget. By the  
end of the event, you'll be familiar with terms such as IRA and 401K  
and leave with your own set of financial planning goals.



4. Jumpstart Your Job Search for Graduate Students

When: Wednesday, April 14, 3 – 4: 30 pm

Have you postponed your job search due to uncertainty about graduation  
date? Have you been nose-to-the-grindstone in Academia till now and  
are wondering how to mount a job search in Industry? Have your career  
goals changed, and your job search taken new directions?



This workshop will give graduate students the knowledge and confidence  
to launch an effective job search. You will learn about valuable  
resources and strategies. We will examine networking as an important  
strategy and discuss how to do it in a way that will work for you. MIT  
has excellent resources to help you network with alumni in different  
fields. You will also learn about other useful resources including  
library databases, and downloadable information available on the MIT- 
CareerBridge site.



5. Alternative Careers for Scientists and Engineers

When: Wednesday, April 14, 6 – 9 pm

If you are exploring your options, leaving your job, or want to learn  
more about career choices, please join us for our annual Alternative  
Careers in Science and Technology event. Meet our panel of over 10  
“One-Night Mentors” who have experience breaking into and thriving in  
careers outside of academia including: business development, patent  
law, consulting, communications, project management, financial  
services, and technology transfer. Mentors will introduce themselves  
and then will be available for “speed networking” at separate tables,  
where you can talk with mentors and learn more about their careers.

7. McKinsey & Co Event: Presenting with Impact

When: Thursday, April 15, 5 – 7 pm

Where: 4-163



McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm with nearly 9,000  
consultants in 90 offices across 50 countries, is hosting two exciting  
summer programs for students working towards advanced professional  
degrees: Insight Healthcare and Insight Engineering & Science.  These  
programs will give non-MBA advanced degree students an insider's look  
into management consulting.  Each of the comprehensive seminars will  
cover a range of topics important to those who are exploring  
alternative career possibilities.  Program agendas include an overview  
of management consulting, an introduction to the type of work we do, a  
management consulting case study, and an opportunity to network with  
colleagues and participate in social activities.



We are hosting several web based presentations to help graduate  
students learn more about McKinsey & Company and our Insight  
programs.  These presentations are designed for: MDs, residents,

8. Closing Ceremonies for Mentoring Poster Contest

When: Thursday, April 15, 5 – 6 pm

Where: Pappalardo Community Room (4-349)



The MIT REFS would like to invite you to attend the closing ceremonies  
for the Poster Contest for Mentoring in Research (http:// 
pcmr.mit.edu). The event will feature an exhibit displaying all the  
submitted poster designs and a reception with light refreshments. At  
this event, Dean Kastner will speak and the prize winners will be  
announced. The structured program for the evening is slated to begin  
at 5:30pm, with time for informal mingling and poster viewing from  
5:00-5:30pm. The event will be open to the MIT community, and it will  
celebrate our entrants, the voters who participated, and the spirit of  
good mentors at MIT.
