2. Mobile Women, Immobile Men? Class, Gender, and everyday mobilities
in Urban Egypt
When: Tuesday, April 6, 6 – 7 pm
Where: 7-338
Speaker:
Farha Ghannam
Associate Professor of Anthropology
Swarthmore College
Looking at urban mobilities as embodied practices and liminal
encounters, this anthropological contribution explores how the
intersection between gender, age, and class shape (in expected and
unexpected ways) the daily movements of men and women in a low-income
neighborhood in Cairo. It shows that while spatial mobility is
strongly structured by one’s material, cultural, and social capital,
it also has the potential to either facilitate or to hinder the
accumulation and/or conversion of these forms of capital. The lecture
traces the trajectories of some young men and women to capture how
their ability to appropriate various urban spaces shift over time and
how they manage their bodies to fit the proper conduct in their
neighborhood while passing as cool youth, good citizens, dependable
workers, and trustworthy clients in other urban areas.
Professor Farha Ghannam is respected urban anthropologist whose work
has examined how the aspirations of politics, planning and individuals
translates into the adaptations of physical space - as in her
acclaimed book, "Remaking the modern: space, relocation, and the
politics of identity in a global Cairo", and the new 'dream lands'
imagined on the outskirts of Middle Eastern suburbia. Her most recent
research investigates how understandings of gender interact with
individual movement and appropriation of space over their lifetimes
and will be published in a book later this year.

5. "The Politics of Madonna Icons: The Mother of God and Russian
National Identity"
When: Friday, April 9, 12 – 1 pm
Where: E51-095
The MIT Center for Bilingual/Bicultural Studies (CB/BS) and the
program in Women's and Gender Studies are pleased to announce a
brownbag forum:
Amy Singleton Adams (The College of the Holy Cross) will speak on "The
Politics of Madonna Icons: The Mother of God and Russian National
Identity"
Russian leaders traditionally use their discovery or possession of
significant Mother of God icons to advance military, social, and
political agendas. Church leaders support the link between these
Madonna icons and Russian self-perception in sermons that describe
Mary's favoritism toward the Russian nation itself. This talk will
explore the narrative culture that surrounds Mother of God icons.
These tales of loss and discovery paint a more complex picture of the
Madonna image, as political and ecclesiastic power is subtly
challenged by the power of the icon itself.
Amy is the author of Noplace Like Home: The Literary Artist and
Russia's Search for Cultural Identity and is currently directing the
"Framing the Madonna" project.
This event is cosponsored by The MIT Center for Bilingual/Bicultural
Studies (CB/BS) and the program in Women's and Gender Studies.
