I was wondering how you went about setting up the service. My initial setup is a Jabberd-2.1cvs build patched to include cyrus sasl support which will authenticate to the local kerberos realm. Unfortunately, progress has been slow because documentation is thin, and I need more experience in using the protocols. Unfortunately, things are pretty confusing in the world of SASL support for Jabber right now. As you've noticed, jabberd 2.1-cvs includes SASL authentication support. I can also provide patches against jabberd 2.0s10 for this support (the patches were written by Simon Wilkinson , who has been doing most of the heavy lifting in this area). On the client side, Gaim recently incorporated some code in the mainline to do SASL authentication, but it needs some work. We also have patches against Gaim 1.5 for GSSAPI SASL authentication, which combine work done by Simon with some work done here. If you are only interested in taking a password from the client over SSL and verifying that against the KDC, that's a much simpler problem. I can likely provide a patch against jabberd 2.0s10 which does just that. (It was written by a co-worker here; I'd have to check with him first. It's really small, though, so I doubt it would be a problem.) Good luck, and let us know how we can help. We are certainly going to consider adding some of the automated notification functionality available in Zephyr to Jabber. It requires some technical work (right now most of the software we're familiar with for sending Jabber messages is GUI-oriented, which isn't helpful for a server) and isn't on the immediate radar, but as the Jabber service goes forward I think we will see it happening. From ghudson at MIT.EDU Mon Feb 27 17:19:07 2006 From: ghudson at MIT.EDU (Greg Hudson) Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 17:19:07 -0500 Subject: [Wocky] jwgc changes for Athena Message-ID: <200602272219.k1RMJ7K9022299@egyptian-gods.mit.edu> I have been looking for ways to reach out to the existing community of Zephyr users for our Jabber rollout. One idea we've considered is a Zephyr transport for jabber.mit.edu; another option is to provide more familiar interfaces to Zephyr users. In furtherance of the second goal, I have pulled down jwgc (http://jwgc.blathersource.org/) and made changes to make it do GSSAPI authentication. I've done the work in /afs/dev.mit.edu/project/jabber/repos/jwgc. Since jwgc is a niche piece of software and is not architecturally very sound, I have not tried to preserve its generality, and my modified version is only suitable for connecting to a server which operates very similarly to jabber.mit.edu. I will be submitting the patches to source-reviewers as follows: Change #1: Fix a bug in the Unicode conversion code Change #2: Fix a bug in the handling of messages with no bodies Change #3: Don't request agent info Change #4: Allow JID domain to differ from connect server Change #5: Refactor stream header creation code Change #6: Replace password auth with GSSAPI auth I expect to deploy this in the next Athena release. I don't think a non-Athena deployment is necessary, except possibly for stock RHEL.
