I think the race condition is actually on the server. Adium is sending two stanzas in a row: 1. Please start me up a session. 2. Do you support google:mail:notify? I belive (though I haven't checked the standards yet) that Adium is supposed to be waiting for a response from stanza 1 before sending stanza 2 or anything else. Because it doesn't, we run afoul of a weird property of jabberd2: it handles requests by passing them around between several independent processes. If the session manager hasn't yet processed stanza 1 and responded, the client handler reacts to stanza 2 by throwing a stream error and closing the stream. But if the delay between stanzas is long enough for the server to process the session request and respond to it (and the stanzas are sent in two separate packates, so there very well may be enough delay), then the client handler notices the response and allows stanza 2. I've looked up the relevant server code and clauses in the RFCs, and sent mail to the jabberd list explaining the problem, and why the server may be being too picky. I got one developer response which seemed sympathetic, but there's no trivial fix for the general problem, so it may be a while before we see movement. While we wait for either Adium or jabberd to budge, we can install a hack on the server to make c2s recognize google:talk:notify iq queries and respond to them without worrying about whether there's an active session. I will work on that change tomorrow. (The jwgc code makes for a nice easy test harness, fortunately.) Unfortunately, there was a bug in my code, and the server became unstable for a couple of hours as a result. I was able to identify and fix the bug in fairly short order, and Mark deployed the fix promptly, so all is believed to be well now. Lessons from this incident: * This looked like an operational issue at first, but was actually a client software issue. Even if "nothing has changed" on the client between working and non-working, we should look for patterns which indicate a client issue. * Auto-updates from outside MIT without MIT-internal testing can be dangerous. * When Jabber is a production service, we'll need more comprehensive testing before we deploy server changes. This implies that it is the Jabber client doing the work (which is what a multi-protocol client does), when in fact it is the server which must be configured to act as a gateway. Pedantics aside I have two questions about this, moving forward will there be a zephyr-jabber gateway? And will you be contributing to jwgc to bring it up to snuff (a drop in replacement for zwgc et al)? http://jwgc.blathersource.org -- H4sICNoBwDoAA3NpZwA9jbsNwDAIRHumuC4NklvXTOD0KSJEnwU8fHz4Q8M9i3sGzkS7BBrm OkCTwsycb4S3DloZuMIYeXpLFqw5LaMhXC2ymhreVXNWMw9YGuAYdfmAbwomoPSyFJuFn2x8 Opr8bBBidccAAAA= -- MOTD on Pungenday, the 45th of Discord, in the YOLD 3172: In Bob We Trust, All Others Bring Data. --Demmings From ghudson at MIT.EDU Fri Apr 28 11:56:37 2006 From: ghudson at MIT.EDU (Greg Hudson) Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2006 11:56:37 -0400 Subject: [Wocky] Jabber chatter blabber In-Reply-To: <200604281546.k3SFkXPf007312@home-on-the-dome.mit.edu> References: <200604281546.k3SFkXPf007312@home-on-the-dome.mit.edu> Message-ID: <1146239798.3794.415.camel@egyptian-gods.mit.edu> On Fri, 2006-04-28 at 11:46 -0400, Jerrad Pierce wrote: > I saw the sidebar about Jabber in the recent Tech Talk, I'd like to point out > that's inacccurate when claiming "Jabber is not a multi-protocol IM client, > but IM clients that support jabber let you chat with users on..." When the server is configured to act as a gateway, it generally stores the AIM (or MSN or whatever) username and password for each Jabber client making use of that gateway. That is a rather insecure model of credential management, and we don't recommend it for any MIT user. We were, actually, talking about multi-protocol clients like Gaim. It might have been clearer to put a word like "many" before "IM clients that support jabber". > Pedantics aside I have two questions about this, moving forward will there be > a zephyr-jabber gateway? And will you be contributing to jwgc to bring it up > to snuff (a drop in replacement for zwgc et al)? http://jwgc.blathersource.org jwgc development looked pretty moribund when I grabbed it, so I have not contributed patches upstream. But it is installed on Athena, with GSSAPI authentication support (replacing the password authentication support) and a bunch of bugfixes. As to whether there will be a zephyr-jabber gateway: maybe. It's something we've been looking into. Unlike most Jabber transports, we could give our Jabber server a copy of the zephyr/zephyr keytab and let it fake up Kerberos credentials to the Zephyr server, so that the server would not need to store users' Kerberos passwords. Gotcha (not that any of those protocols are secure in the first place) >jwgc development looked pretty moribund when I grabbed it, so I have not >contributed patches upstream. But it is installed on Athena, with >GSSAPI authentication support (replacing the password authentication >support) and a bunch of bugfixes. Yeah, I saw. However it certainly doesn't qualify as a drop-in yet. And unfortunately all of the other CLI that I know of are more like owl, and lock you in away from your shell and the ability to mix commands. Long long ago (biting off more than I could chew for the time) I attempted to use Net::Jabber to create a zwgc analog. Net::Jabber, while kind of arcane/OO happy, is apparently stable and thorough enough now to have a few clients based on it. Of course, you may not want a few dozen instances of perl running fulltime on the dialup servers. -- H4sICNoBwDoAA3NpZwA9jbsNwDAIRHumuC4NklvXTOD0KSJEnwU8fHz4Q8M9i3sGzkS7BBrm OkCTwsycb4S3DloZuMIYeXpLFqw5LaMhXC2ymhreVXNWMw9YGuAYdfmAbwomoPSyFJuFn2x8 Opr8bBBidccAAAA= -- MOTD on Pungenday, the 45th of Discord, in the YOLD 3172: In Bob We Trust, All Others Bring Data. --Demmings From ray0074 at realestateagentnc.com Sun Apr 30 00:28:14 2006 From: ray0074 at realestateagentnc.com (Justin Bailey) Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2006 13:28:14 +0900 Subject: [Wocky] The Industries leading enhancement product, now on sale!
