Good afternoon,
Information Services & Technology (IS&T) has updated the Administrative Staff Virtual Machine (VM) and Student VM for Fall 2013. IS&T provides preloaded generalized virtual machines with Windows 7 SP1, security updates, and a bundle of software for administrators or students at MIT. The Fall 2013 VMs are the first to include the Sophos anti-virus solution.
The Administrative Staff VM includes preinstalled software like Outlook, SAPgui and BrioQuery. The Admin VM is supported only on Macintosh host machines as a way to access Windows-only software.
The Student VM contains software for students like Emacs and JDK with NetBeans. The Student VM is designed to be used on Windows or Macintosh host machines, but an extra step is required to configure the full feature set on a Windows host.
Download and Setup
You can download the VM, set your username and password, and access Windows software without needing to install Windows or the included applications.
Please note that in order to use this VM, you must have VMware Fusion 5.0.3 (Macs) or later or VMware Workstation 9.0.2 (Windows or Linux) or later installed and working beforehand. VMware and the VM are both available from the Software Grid at

Documentation
As you wait for these very large VMs (8 GB compressed) to download, please read through the short

Support
The IS&T Help Desk is ready to assist you in setting up the Administrative Staff or Student VMs or using the supported software it includes. You can contact the Help Desk at (617) 253-1101 or helpdesk at mit.edu<mailto:helpdesk at mit.edu>. You can also submit a request online<http://ist.mit.edu/help>.
IS&T plans to release new versions of the virtual machines twice a year. The release will include updated versions of software with security and anti-virus patches applied. We welcome feedback about the included software and settings.
We hope these VMs will benefit you and the communities you support.
Thanks,
Jon
