Good Afternoon,

In the first quarter of 2009 Microsoft is expected to release Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), a new version of its Internet browser. In anticipation of this release, Information Services & Technology (IS&T) is kicking off a project to evaluate the current beta version of IE8 and would like to invite you to participate. The two-fold focus of this effort is to:

* identify areas of potential impact on the MIT computing community

* conduct tests related to MIT web sites - including upgrading to IE8, certificate generation, and certificate usage - while documenting and finding possible workarounds for any conflicts or incompatibility issues

If you have a test environment where you can test IE8 with the sites you need to use for MIT learning and business, we would appreciate hearing about your experience. You are welcome to participate in the release effort by sending your test results and findings to ie-release at mit.edu<mailto:ie-release at mit.edu>. Progress of the IE8 release testing by the MIT community will be tracked and available at https://wikis.mit.edu/confluence/display/SWRT/Windows+Internet+Explorer+8.

More about IE8

Currently IE8 is in the beta 2 stage of development and can be freely downloaded from Microsoft's site at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/worldwide-sites.aspx

IE8 includes many notable new and improved features: accelerators, enhanced navigation with compatibility view, web slices, instant search, private browsing, automatic crash recovery, and much more. It also provides security through a robust new architecture. IE8's security features help defend against malicious software (also known as malware), and better protect against the theft of personal data through fraudulent web sites, a practice known as phishing.

IE8 beta 2 can be installed on both 32- and 64-bit machines running Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2003.

For a more complete list of features for IE8, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/features/overview.aspx?tabid=1&catid=1.<blocked::http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/features/overview.aspx?tabid=1&catid=1>

Thank you.
