Good afternoon,
Information Services and Technology is pleased to announce support
and documentation for Outlook Express, the default e-mail program
installed with Windows XP Professional. The current version of
Outlook Express supported by IS&T is Outlook Express 6.
IS&T recommends that users of Eudora for Windows with Post Office
Protocol (POP) moving to the Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP),
consider switching to Outlook Express.
Outlook Express has been found to provide a more consistent user
experience than Eudora configured to use IMAP.
IS&T recommends that new students, faculty, and staff using Windows
XP Professional, configure Outlook Express to access their e-mail.
Notable Features of Outlook Express
-------------------------------------------------------
- Support for migrating Eudora mailboxes and address books to Outlook Express.
- The ability to receive mail from multiple e-mail accounts
- Supports SMTP authentication
- SSL for receiving and sending mail
- Supports LDAP ( Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, an Internet
protocol that e-mail and other programs use to look up information
from a server.)
How to Obtain
--------------------
Outlook Express is installed by default on machines running Windows
XP Professional.
As with all e-mail clients, users are encouraged to remain
"up-to-date" with all security patches and versions. Outlook Express
can be updated by using the MIT Windows Automatic Update Service
(WAUS) <http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/windows/updates/> by
configuring Windows Update on your machine, or by visiting the
Microsoft update site:
Note, users must be running Internet Explorer to obtain updates from the site.
Known Issues
--------------------
Outlook Express is unable to support Kerberos authentication; POP
support for Outlook Express is not available
Rules creation does not apply to IMAP or HTTP accounts by default
Outlook Express can not be configured to use MITs Tech Time.
