Curry College, at 1071 Blue Hill Avenue, Milton, is a small, liberal arts
institution, on the outskirts of Boston.
The Theatre program is a Concentration, housed within the Communication
Dept.
While some of our graduates are working in Stage Management, Lighting,
Costuming and Performance,
our primary goal is to use Theatre to instill in our students, the values
of collaboration, commitment,
accountability and team-work, while exposing them to the various skills and
procedures necessary
to bring Theatre productions to an audience.
All Theatre work is taken for credit.
Each student who is cast in a production enrolls in Theatre Practicum.
Their commitment includes two consecutive Tech Hours per week for everyone,
in set construction, painting, and light hang-and-focus. Additionally,
there is a “Stage Crew” class,
which takes place following Tech Hours, and continues with set preparation.
During their four years at Curry College, many of the Theatre students also
participate in
Supervisory Board, taking on various tasks for the season
(e.g. Stage Management, Lights, Sound, Costumes, Props, Publicity, General
Management, etc.)
Facilities are modest.
They include a small Scene Shop which opens onto a Proscenium stage,
a Black Box space,
Control Booth
and a Green Room/Dressing Room.
The light grid is accessed by a hydraulic lift, for which students must
pass Genie certification.
There are two storage facilities elsewhere on campus.
Two shows are produced each semester; one on the Main Stage and one in the
Black Box.
