Master Carpenter
Description:
To ensure safe, efficient and educationally valid use of the scene shop by sharing in the supervision of construction, painting, rigging, and installation of scenery and properties for the Department of Performing Arts, Emerson Stage, and other scene shop users.
Primary Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
* Instruct and supervise students engaged in co-curricular production work, various class labs, or working as student employees,
* in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and machinery;
* in the proper use and handing of materials;
* in carpentry techniques of layout and construction, including preparation of cutting lists, lofting, sawing, sub-assembly & assembly;
* in metalworking techniques, including rolling, forming, bending, shearing, cutting, SMAW & GMAW welding;
* in basic scenic painting techniques, including flame retardant treating, sizing, basing, cartooning, and pouncing;
* Develop, in consultation with the Technical Director, daily work lists for shop staff. Assign tasks to shop personnel. Provide regular assessments of the skills obtained by students.
* Monitor shop stock material inventories and advise T.D. when stocks are low. Maintain running accounts of materials used per project when appropriate.
* Supervise scene shop use by non-PA users.
* Ensure the regular (typically daily) clean-up of the shop, including a cursory inventory of tools.
* Coordinate the regular maintenance of shop tools and equipment.
* Participate in the construction of scenery, particularly those units requiring sophisticated techniques
* Schedule permitting, teach Scenery Construction Stagecraft.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Education
* BA degree or significant professional experience.
* Experience with a broad array of scene shop equipment.
* Knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations related to shop operations.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Education
* MFA
* Knowledge of design and painting techniques.
Required Prior Work Experience
* Five or more years or related work.
Preferred Prior Work Experience
* Experience running a professional scene shop or educational scene shop at the undergraduate level.
