John,
Can you build a steel frame with outriggers that are perpendicular to the
plane of the door? See the attached PDF. You could add another set of
outriggers on the other side of the door for more strength.
If you use a pair of steel frames 6" apart with welded spacers every 2' or
so, you will get a lot more stiffness. You can attach the door jambs to the
pair of frames.
The size of the outriggers depends on the steel you have. I would guess that
1" or 1.5" would be enough. Add plates to fasten them to the floor (at the
ends and at the door) with stage screws or drill holes and use bolts. Put
screw plugs in the stage floor so they can be struck and reset without
damaging the floor..
