A REMINDER ABOUT WIRELESS MICS!

White Space Update -- Reminder to Vacate 700 MHz Band by June 12!
As we have been reporting, on January 15, the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) issued an Order and a Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking making effective their call for wireless
microphone users to vacate the 700 MHz spectrum by June
12, 2010. Performing arts organizations using
wireless microphones must comply with the FCC's order and leave
the 700 MHz Band as soon as possible.
To aid in this process, the FCC has made available an online
resource for wireless microphone users that includes a
Manufacturers Equipment list of affected wireless microphone
systems and a Frequently Asked Questions section. You can
also call the main FCC switchboard at 1-888-CALL-FCC
(1-888-225-5322) and select Option #2 to speak with someone about
vacating the 700 MHz Band.
In addition to the above, two member organizations of the
Performing Arts Alliance have created resources to help members
through this transition process:
* Association of Performing Arts Presenters
* Theatre
Communications Group
If you have not already done so, be sure to confirm the
frequencies on which your wireless microphones operate. If
they operate in the 700 MHz Band, consult the resources
above to verify if your equipment can be modified to
operate outside of the affected spectrum. Depending on
make and model, some of your equipment could be re-banded with a
new frequency range, so it is important to begin this process
immediately.

As you may remember, the 700 MHz Band frequencies are now
being used by public safety entities (such as police, fire, and
emergency services) and by commercial providers of wireless
services (such as wireless broadband services). The
wireless microphones that had been operating in the old TV
broadcast channels can cause harmful interference to these
public safety and wireless consumer services. Therefore,
all users of wireless microphones (or certain low auxiliary
stations) that operate on any of the frequencies in the 700 MHz
Band - including both licensed users (under Part 74) and
unlicensed users - now have to stop operating in this band.
The Performing Arts Alliance urges you to spread the word
about the June 12 deadline to vacate the 700 MHz Band to
any colleagues affected by this decision. As the FCC moves
forward to consider how wireless microphones should be regulated
in the future, the Performing Arts Alliance will continue to
update you on any decisions that affect the performing arts
community.
