Dear friends and colleagues,

This is not an announcement about upcoming classes or events. Rather, it is an appeal to you to help spread the word about recent events at the Longy School of Music, where I have taught dance for 15+ years.

On January 20, 2010, an overwhelming majority of eligible Longy faculty voted to form a faculty union, a local of the American Federation of Teachers. For background, please see the "pre-election" links at http://www.longyfacultyunion.org/ .

On March 5, 2010, the Longy administration held a full-faculty meeting in which faculty members were told that a drastic "realignment" of the Longy faculty was imminent, and that all faculty would receive letters letting them know whether they will be rehired, reassigned, or neither (i.e., axed). Indeed, the letters have started arriving today.

Needless to say, Longy faculty are not feeling so great right now. I cannot speak for all of them; I speak now for myself only. I believe that an important step is to let as many people as possible know what has happened, and what is happening. If you know Longy students, please tell them. If you write or know someone who does, please help generate articles about what's going on at Longy. If you see me out leafletting in front of Longy, please wave!

Thanks,

Ken
