The Boston Conservatory is seeking a Costume Shop Manager (CSM) responsible for evaluating all costume designs for feasibility, and executing and supervising the execution of designs for all theatre, dance, and opera productions. The CSM attends scheduled Production Meetings for all productions, ensures costuming issues are addressed as needed and that artistic need deadlines are met as discussed. The CSM supervises the Assistant Costume Shop Manager, all in-house build crews and oversees the execution of jobbed-out projects.
NOTE: This is a salaried, full-time 43-week academic year position with excellent benefits.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
· Coordinates all costuming and makeup needs during the execution phase of production; oversees all costume shop activity. As requested by Production Manager, works with designers to address budgetary compliance. Suggests rental or borrowing alternatives to save time and money.
· As requested, prepares appropriate information for each Production Meeting; such information must include anything relevant to the phase of production each meeting will address.
· Trains the student workforce in costume design and construction as needed; ensures that all phases of production (from preliminary designs through post-production) are thoroughly planned, organized, and effectively executed.
· Ensures that proper safety measures and adequate housekeeping are observed.
· Monitors costume construction in relation to each productions established artistic needs and the overall production schedule; initiates corrective action when potential conflicts arise.
· Immediately alerts the Production Manager of any potential problems and recommends solutions.
· Ensures that all Dress Rehearsals are attended by the Designer or Shop Manager who will resolve technical difficulties encountered as well as evaluates progress and functionality. Coordinates with the same to set shop priorities based upon these evaluations.
· Identifies wardrobe personnel for each production.
· Assists Production Manager in identifying hair/wig make-up artists or designers for each production as needed.
· Coordinates cleaning and returning of all costumes for each production.
· In the absence of student stock managers, helps organize rentals to faculty or student productions and restocks costume returns.
· Helps costume designers shop for garments and materials for productions as needed which may require driving to various locations for purchases.
· Sets own work schedule to meet other individual production and/or institutional needs. Sets the work schedules of those under his/her supervision.
· Performs other duties as needed that enhance institutional professionalism and/or academic needs.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelors Degree required. Minimum 2 years experience as shop manager or assistant shop manager. Experience required in draping, sewing, dying, cutting, patterning and wardrobe. Prior experience required in teaching or training students or volunteers. Experience in Dance costumes preferred. Must be able to regularly lift objects of up to 35 lbs. A valid drivers license is required. Scheduling flexibility required as The Boston Conservatory renovates its theater and support areas during the 2009-2010 academic year.
