NEXT MONTH IN SMPTE NEW ENGLAND!

BEHIND THE SCENES AT ESPN HEADQUARTERS:  A Special Saturday Visit & Tour to ESPN in Bristol, CT via Chartered Motor Coach from Newton, MA.

Save this date for what is sure to be one of the most exciting section meetings this season!

            DATE:            Saturday, May 20th

TIME:             Busses depart from the Woodland MBTA Green Line Station in Newton promptly at 8:00 AM with arrival at ESPN Headquarters @ 10:00 AM.  Visit to include formal technical presentations, tours of facility, catered luncheon.  Departure from ESPN for return trip to Newton will be @ 5:00 PM.

LOCATION:  This is a special all-day event that requires attendees to pre-register no later than Friday, April 28th.  Due to limited meeting space at ESPN and other logistical issues, this event will be limited to 75 people.  Also, due to limited parking at ESPN the use of personal cars and vans is prohibited.

                        To defray the costs associated with this special event, there is a modest fee that can be pre-paid on-line or by personal check that must be received NO LATER THAN APRIL 28th.

                        Finally, there is a minimum number attendee requirement to meet cost figures for two versus one motor coach and food catering at ESPN.  If we do not get the numbers we need, the event may be scaled back or cancelled entirely.

THE EVENT:

“SMPTE New England Visits and Tours ESPN’s new Digital Center in Bristol, CT.”

Ted Szypulski, Senior Director, Project Development for ESPN, has cordially invited the New England Section of SMPTE to participate in a visit to the ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut. Ted will be providing some of his past SMPTE/IBC and NAB presentations, depending on time.  Each presentation takes about 30 minutes.

SMPTE is New England is chartering Motor Coach transportation with Sansone Motors with parking for your car in Newton at the Woodland MBTA Green Line Station.

PLANNED Itinerary for Saturday, May 20, 2006:

Ø      Depart Newton Woodland Green Line MBTA Station at 8:00 AM, via twin 47-seat Motor coaches
Ø      Arrive at ESPN Bristol by 10:25 AM
Ø      Disembark Motor Coaches inside ESPN Security perimeter, assemble into presentation area.
Ø      Gathered and seated by 10:50 AM
Ø      Presentations and questions 11:00 AM until Noon
Ø      Catered Lunch at ESPN until 12:50 PM
Ø      Ten-person group escorted tours of the ESPN Digital Center from 1:05 PM until 2:35 PM
Ø      SMPTE Guests re-assemble to Motor Coaches and depart close to 3 PM
Ø      Return to Newton Woodland MBTA Station and parking facility by 5:30 PM

This is a very unique opportunity to see what is perhaps the most-modern and most-sophisticated Digital HDTV teleproduction facility in North America, and a chance to hob-nob with the persons who designed and built it. This tour will include discussion of the custom and specialized products and systems for HDTV sports production and air-play, as well as multiple program steams in various languages and television standards. Technical and Operational personnel will be available to explain the system operation and to answer questions. It will be a GREAT learning experience for us all.

IMPORTANT FOR SMPTE MEMBER AND ATTENDEE GUESTS:

It is imperative that we establish a reservation for you and your guest for a HEAD COUNT because the attendance capacity has been capped at 75 persons. ESPN Security must have the names of all prospective attendees 48 hours in advance, otherwise they will not be permitted entry into the facility.

COST:

Because of the costs of the motor coaches and the catered luncheon, we are requiring that each SMPTE MEMBER attendee provide a $35.00 per-person fee, to cover the Sections out-of-pocket expenses. For NON-Members, the fee will be $40.00.

PAYMENT:

$35.00 or $40.00-per-person can be executed via an ON-LINE transaction, or a check made out to SMPTE New England, c/o Paul Beck, 71 Cross Street, Foxborough, MA  02035-1335.

Directions to MBTA Woodland Station on the Green Line
Take Route 128 to Route 16, taking the Eastbound (Towards Boston) exit. While heading East, you will pass the Newton-Wellesley Hospital on your right. Just after the Hospital, on your right, will be the Woodland MTBA Station on The Green Line. The Sansone Buses will be in plain view. 

Coming FROM Boston, take I-90, the Mass Pike to Exit 15 in West Newton, and stay on Route 16 heading West crossing over Route 30 (Commonwealth Avenue) for about 2 miles. The Woodland MBTA Station will appear on your left just before the large Newton Wellesley Hospital.

Parking at the MBTA Lot is by numbered parking spaces and it is self-pay with coins or currency.

Upcoming SMPTE/New England Meetings:

Due to NAB being held late this year, our annual NAB Wrap-Up Meeting is scheduled to take place Wednesday evening, May 3rd.  More details regarding the NAB Wrap-Up will be sent in a separate mailing.

SMPTE/New England meetings are usually held at 7pm (refreshments at 6:30) on the third Wednesday of each month from September through June.  Locations vary to allow attendees to tour various sites of interest. You don't have to be a SMPTE member to attend and there is no admission charge. Students and the public are invited to attend. Dates and locations are tentative.
