[Usittne] Motorized turntable?

Dear Michael,

thank you for the info. I am talking with the
Huntington about their motorized dealings, as well as
Sapsis. High Output and ALPS in Boston do much the
same thing as LimeLight, and they rent chain drives,
but not assemblies I am interested in. I was just
presented with the design on Fri, so it's entirely
possible we'd have to cut the whole revolve idea
alltogether due to budget concerns, but I need to get
some solid figures on how much this might cost before
we cut it:)

Thank you for your offer of help as well - I take all
the help I can get since I hate working in a vacuum,
and I am doing some brainstorming with a person here
in Salem, but they haven't done a turntable in a
while... I have only done one turntable before, and
it was man-powered, so this is quite different. We
would have to build the actual revolve part of the
assembly regardless, so to answer your other
questions:

> 1. Revolve on a rake, is the revolve raked also?

Yes. I should have a working sketch done by the end
of the day, I can e-mail it to you. It gets better
though - the rake is also a wagon. I know, too many
things at once, but I want to know if it's possible at
all. The idea behind the piece is that Dracula
commands some furniture and things to move with his
powers... The raked wagon is 12'x12', 6" DS to 36"
US. The Revolve is on top of it, raked as well,
having a 6" profile (this is approximate, it could be
as thin as possible or probably up to 9" thick) It
would need to support at least 750 lbs worth of people
while moving and itself. It could be built as either
wheels up or wheels down or some other way, so long as
the DS trap (oh yes, there is also a hole in it...)
doesn't snag on anything...

> 2. Does the revolve mount on top of the rake or is
> it built in so it's flush and level with the rake?

See above. This size of the disk presents an
additional problem of gravitaional pull down the rake,
so the center pivot should be as beefy as possible (I
also just thought of having tires/wheels supporting it
on the DS end so it doesn't try to travel downwards
too much...)

> 3. What is your time frame, when does the build
> start and when does the revolve need to be installed
and operational?

Large minus - build starts Sept 7, when the students
get here. Show loads in Sept 24, it should be
operational by Sept 26, show starts to tech Oct 8.
This is one of 8 large scenic pieces (all wagons
except for the trap stage plug...)

> 7. Will the revolve be built in the shop and moved
> to the stage or built in place on stage?

Large plus (in this case) - the stage is the place we
build, so it doesn't have to be built in pieces.

> 4. What is your budget for the revolve, all
inclusive?

Haven't gotten that far yet, but I think I can't give
it more than a $1000 - given the other set pieces,
that's more than fair.

> 5. Is your crew all student or do you have some
> staff other than yourself?

All students (mainly clueless sophomores, no
workstudies) and an ATD who is also doing a million
other things.

> 6. Does your shop have welding capability?

Yes, and it will have to be a steel frame for the
wagon and possibly for the revolve itself (although I
won't have the time to bend steel into the circle...).

> 8. Does the design allow any way to conceal the
> drive mechanism or must it be located beneath the
deck/rake?

If it were to have a rim drive, the 12'x12' deck can
be augmented to house the drive upstage in a consealed
box. If it were a chain/sprocket mechanism, it could
be either upstage or belowdeck. As I said, this is
the beginning of the design, and the designer would be
all right with just the rake, but I HAVE to know how
possible this is:)

I hope Western Mass is as beautiful as ever right now
- I went to MHC for undergrad, so I miss it...

Thank you so much for the info. Please let me know
your thoughts.
