[Usittne] Dust Collection question

Hi--

Depends on the scope of the system you envision. Dust collection "done
right"--i.e. a turnkey system with central collector and designed
ductwork--is expensive and typically requires that machines have only
one fixed location, which can be a problem in shops where machines are
moved around as projects require. I've only been around the
installation of one such system; it cost $30K in 1982.

We currently have a mix of Delta, Jet and Dayton portables; most are 10
years old and have never given a problem. They work okay at collecting
the dangerous fine dust, but are not as effective with the larger
particles as a central system would be. The best thing we've done to
improve their effectiveness is to wire them through relays so they come
on automatically when the machine is started.

We have a FumeMaster exhauster in our metal shop. It's worked fine for
12years, although the flexible hose is tedious to drag around when
welding large units. An array of articulated overhead arms, each
attached to its own exhauster, is reported to be the best approach to this.

I've heard many good things about Oneida Air Systems dust collection
systems, but have no first-hand experience.

You might check with officer(s) of the National's Health and Safety
Comission. The did several sessions on dust collection at a conference
a few years ago.

Good luck--I'd be interested to hear of any good sources of info you
discover.

We currently have 2 portable dust collectors (2HP each) one attachted to the radial arm saw and one on the table saw, but are looking into a more comprehensive system including air filtration and possibly fume collection for welding purposes. Has anyone recently installed such a system or have any recommendations for vendors or equipment that we should look into?
