[Usittne] Help on new spaces

John, Bob, and all other consultants -- I did anticipate your response.
I really do value your work, have seen many beautiful projects completed
with consultants, including one with which I was involved, and I've
lived with many pains in the --- completed without them. I do intend to
stand on somebody's desk to get a consultant (and one that is not part
of the architect's group), and I do understand that earlier is better,
but I have to find the moment and the person for the battle, otherwise I
can get marginalized in this project.
Meanwhile I'm obliged to rough in some requirements so the scale of
project can be comprehended -- how many theaters and how big, how many
dance studios, how many performance classrooms, tech classrooms, general
classrooms, shops, dressing rooms, storage spaces, other production
support spaces, office spaces, other spaces nobody but us thinks about,
and how big (sq ft & ht) these need to be. The music department and the
art department are doing the same. We are indeed in the beginning of
doing the kind of vision-building that Bob argues for, and have had a
meeting or two and been given homework to do with our faculty. I'm sure
more will come, but we may be talking about a project that won't open
for a decade. This is, after all, a Mass state project, and project
priorities get juggled constantly.
All of this does not, however, mitigate my interest in seeing good
working spaces, and hearing about the annoying problems (likely in
theaters built without consultants) people have encountered.
Finally, I make a plea for people to include their email addresses so I
don't need to inflict this discussion on the whole list.
Thanks for your responses and suggestions. I do appreciate them.
Arthur
