All~
Greetings, I am writing to add a small annotation regarding secondary
texts to Shekhar's email from earlier this evening. I had given him
a stack of materials, and had only meant to suggest to you a handful
of things that have been particularly useful in framing the issues I
seek to address in my chapter. Those are:
Mark Harrison, "The Foundations of Public Health in India: Crisis and
Constraint", chapter 3 of Public Health in British India: Anglo-Indian
Preventive Medicine 1859-1914, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,
1994.
http://www.mit.edu/~shekhar/urban-media/elbev/harrison_public_health.pdf
Di Wang, "Street Control", chapter 5 of Street Culture in Chengdu:
Public Space, Urban Commoners and Local Politics, 1870-1930, Stanford:
Stanford University Press, 2003.
http://www.mit.edu/~shekhar/urban-media/elbev/di_wang_street_culture.pdf
Paul Rabinow, "Techno-Cosmpolitanism: Governing Morocco", chapter 9 of
French Modern: Norms and Forms of the Social Environment, Cambridge, MA:
MIT Press, 1989.
http://www.mit.edu/~shekhar/urban-media/elbev/rabinow_norms_forms.pdf
John E. Brush, "The Morphology of Indian Cities" in Roy Turner, ed.,
India's Urban Future: Selected Studies from an International Conference
sponsored by Kingsley Davis, Richard L. Park, and Catherine Bauer
Wurster, Berkeley: University of California Press, 1962.

The other items (Bogle/Mukerjee, Çelik and Ellefson) are worth
looking at if people have time, but the above four selections are
thematically key. As noted, I will send along a draft of my
dissertation chapter early next week. Hope everyone is enjoying the
holiday, and I look forward to seeing many of you soon.
Eric
