Eric, Mike, Nikhil:
I think we should wait for Mike to return to kick things off properly,
so let's shift the first meeting to Tursday 3 October at 6.00 p.m. I
will have a room in E51 booked for us.
There have been a number of references to people whom we can call up for
the group this semester. Eric has suggested inviting our friend Anand
Taneja, lately of SARAI in Delhi and now doing his doctorate in
anthropology at Columbia, and who works on the politics of medieval
ruins and plebein spaces in Old Delhi. Nikhil has suggested inviting
Mike's student Tulsi Srinivas to come and speak about some work she has
done on Bangalore.
Mike, you missed the interesting (but largely anecodotal) talk by
Ramachandra Guha on Patrick Geddes in India, which happened in the
history seminar today afternoon at MIT. I will scan selections from
Geddes' main book, Cities in Evolution, as well as create an archive of
his major town planning reports on Lahore, Indore, Bandra, Thana,
Calcutta, Dacca, Lucknow, etc. and circulate them early next week for
the group.
Incidentally, 3 October is the day after the birth anniversary of three
major figures in our tradition: Patrick Geddes, Mahatma Gandhi, and
myself, all of whom were born on 2 October. So I hope we can raise a
toast to these three great intellectuals after we meet for the reading
group.
Best,
Shekhar
