Good Day,
IS&T has begun a Red Hat Enterprise 5 Linux Release Project.
The work of the project will be to perform basic install and update
testing of the new Red Hat Enterprise 5 Linux, and to make
appropriate updates to IS&T documentation so that customers will be
able to make a smooth transition from RHEL 4 to RHEL 5.
The RHEL 5 Linux Release Project will also contain some mini-release
projects to update critical IS&T-supplied software.
Notable features of RHEL 5 include:
Re-arrangement of product offerings from AS, ES, WS and Desktop to a
diverse array of variations on a Client and a Server product.
Significant re-arrangement of what packages are included in which
version. (For example, Server comes without OpenOffice.)
Update of OpenOffice to version 2.0 on RHEL 5 Client.
Change from the up2date protocol to yum for Red Hat Network updates.
Integration of the Xen virtualization system into RHEL 5 Server, and
the Multi-OS option for RHEL 5 Client.
Updates to hardware device drivers, security fixes, performance
enhancements, bug fixes, and updated applications and services.
The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Release Notes can be found on the RHEL 5
documentation site:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/index.html
The Red Hat Enterprise 5 Linux Release Team will publish updates on
project progress in the Red Hat Enterprise 5 Linux Release Notebook at
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/rhe.
If you have questions, suggestions, or would like to participate in the
release of Red Hat Enterprise 5 Linux, please contact the team via
email at rhe-release at mit.edu.
