From iaw at MIT.EDU Mon Sep 26 14:25:01 2005 From: iaw at MIT.EDU (Ian Waitz) Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 14:25:01 -0400 Subject: [Unified-mailman] Systems Problem Schedule for next few weeks Message-ID: Unified students: At our weekly Unified staff meeting today, we developed a plan for the Unified systems problems for the next several weeks that will smooth-out the workload and provide an opportunity for midcourse corrections to your work. PRIOR PLAN: Water Rocket Analysis (SP3) due Thursday 9/29 by 1pm. Water Rocket Build/Test (SP4) due Thursday 10/6 by 1pm. Then two weeks with no systems problems (next systems problem lecture--Truss Lab--on 10/20). NEW PLAN: Water Rocket Analysis (SP3) parts (a) and (b) due by Thursday 9/29 at 1pm in the TA office. No S/L lecture on Thursday at 1pm--rather we will have a help session in the student lounge area to go over your algorithms and spreadsheet implementation. This way everyone can have a working, debugged spreadsheet to go ahead and complete the latter two parts of SP3. Water Rocket Analysis (SP3) parts (c) and (d) due by Thursday 10/6 at 1pm in the S/L lecture. The 10/6 S/L lecture will focus on the build/test part of the project (SP4). The report on the build/test activity (SP4) will be due 2 weeks later on 10/20 at 1pm to give you plenty of time--accounting for the two class days that will be missed because of the Columbus Day holiday. We will start the Truss Lab with the S/L lecture on 10/20 at 1pm. If you have any questions or concerns about the new plan, please let me know. Hall) Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 14:26:16 -0400 Subject: [Unified-mailman] Unified Quiz Policy Message-ID: Folks, The Unified staff would like to clarify its policy regarding quiz absences. The policy as stated in Course Facts is: Be aware that, as a rule, there are no make-up quizzes for unexcused quiz absences. We will give a make-up quiz for excused absences only. There are two situations under which a quiz absence may be excused: (1) If you have a serious illness or personal emergency that prevents your attendance at the quiz. You must notify us before the quiz, and the seriousness of the illness or emergency must be confirmed by Counseling and Support Services. (2) If you have a valid reason to miss a quiz, you may request to miss the quiz, a-priori, and the course staff will determine whether the absence will be excused. You must make your request at least two weeks in advance of the date you need a decision. The decision to grant such a request is at the discretion of the course staff. Generally, we will grant such requests only for reasons related to MIT educational activities, such as varsity athletic events. Under the second category above, please note that you should request an excused absence two weeks prior to the date you need to purchase airline tickets, pay for a conference registration, etc. The fact that you have already made a purchase is not a factor that the staff considers in making its decision. Also, in your request, you should carefully explain the educational purpose of the trip. Our decision is made by weighing the educational value of the activity against the considerable additional time that is incurred by the staff to give a makeup exam, so a clear, convincing explanation is appreciated.
