Dear Undergrads,
tl;dr: Drop date is April 23rd. Check your syllabi for conflicts with the rules and regulations here<https://facultygovernance.mit.edu/faculty-rules-page>, especially the final exams and assignments dates. Report a violation here<http://ua.mit.edu/policy/violations/>. Read below for common violation examples.
With the drop date fast approaching, we urge you to check your syllabi today and resolve potential conflicts that may be too late to fix at the end of the term. A notable example of such a conflict is assignments being due past May 12th in classes with a final exam, and several other important examples are listed below.
You can report academic violations here<http://ua.mit.edu/policy/violations/>.
There are a number of rules governing class logistics, scheduling of classes, homework, and exams. It is important to confirm that your syllabi follow the guidelines laid out in the rules and regulations.<https://facultygovernance.mit.edu/faculty-rules-page> If you have concerns, please complete a report<http://ua.mit.edu/policy/violations/> via the UA Website.
Examples of Academic Violations in Undergraduate Classes
Exams
* Excluding finals during finals week, no exams are allowed after May 12th
* For classes with finals, no assignments can be due after May 12th
* For classes without finals, one assignment can be due between May 12th and May 16th
* Tests held outside of class time must not exceed 2 hours, must begin no earlier than 7:30 pm, and may not be held on Monday.
* When a test is held outside scheduled class time, a regularly scheduled class hour (lecture or recitation) shall be canceled, or no assignment shall fall due that calendar week.
Schedules
* The following information should be available to you by now:
* Number and kinds of assignments,
* the precise schedule of tests and due dates for major projects,
* whether or not there will be a final examination,
* and the grading criteria and procedure
* Not following MIT time repeatedly is a violation - class should start 5 minutes after the scheduled time, and end 5 minutes earlier.
Examples of Common Issues that are NOT Academic Violations
Grades
* Unfortunately, grades not being released promptly is not a violation, as long as it’s before the end of the term.
Assignments
* Assignments due on a long weekend, or holiday, are not a violation.
* A PSET being due on the same week as an exam outside of normal class time, as long as a class is canceled, is not a violation.
If you think one of your classes is breaking a rule, there are several steps that you can take.
1. If you are comfortable doing so, you can talk to the professor directly or message on Piazza.
2. You can report the violation anonymously to the UA (ua.mit.edu/policy/violations/<http://ua.mit.edu/policy/violations/>) or to the Chair of the Faculty (exam-termregs at mit.edu<https://owa.exchange.mit.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=sXBzndcvxqyFsas39ODzA5SCbvMB29Pnt9HpHU3I-5Xik1ANWiLWCA..&URL=mailto%3aexam-termregs%40mit.edu>).
Remember—it is in your best interest to check your syllabus and reach out now instead of later in the semester, when it may be too late. Violations caught late in the semester are difficult to resolve in a fair and timely manner.
Thank you for taking the time to check your syllabi; if you have any questions, please email violations at mit.edu<https://owa.exchange.mit.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=jz_MBUTJRuvdmkxbvjnx6qs5LrjWZWm5QufNIhB7_kPik1ANWiLWCA..&URL=mailto%3aviolations%40mit.edu>.
Best,
UA Education Violations Committee
