Hello Undergrads!

As you all may know, President Reif will soon be stepping down<https://news.mit.edu/2022/rafael-reif-to-step-down-mit-president-0210> as the President of MIT. In many ways, the President of MIT sets and influences the priorities and future direction of the Institute, those of which have immense impact on our everyday experiences. The MIT Presidential Search Committee is tasked with the very important role of selecting the next MIT President.

For the first time in our history, after much effort and advocacy from the UA, we are excited to announce that two students, one graduate student and one undergraduate student, will be members on the MIT Presidential Search Committee.

For additional context, the UA is currently helping the MIT Corporation run the student selection process. The Corporation’s five recent graduate members, the Chair of the MIT Corporation, and the Chair of the Presidential Search Committee will oversee the selection of the student members.

Following the written application, shortlisted candidates will interview with select members of the Corporation’s five recent graduate members, the Chair of the MIT Corporation, and the Chair of the Presidential Search Committee. Candidates must be available to interview on Wednesday (4/06), Friday (4/08), and Saturday (4/09). Please take note of the quick turnaround.

The Presidential Search Committee aims to convene a committee with a diverse set of backgrounds; student members will be selected based on the following criteria:

  *   Track record of service and involvement within the MIT community
  *   Deep understanding of MIT’s wide range of opportunities, challenges, and strategic issues
  *   Capable of connecting and communicating with a wide range of stakeholders
  *   Able to maintain confidentiality throughout the search process
  *   Available to attend weekly meetings over many months, including 2-to-3-hour meetings every Monday, interview days on Saturdays, and trips to meet thought leaders in higher education
  *   Enrolled as a student through Fall 2022

As the chief executive officer of the Institute, the President of MIT leads the work to assure MIT’s continued excellence in education and research. This is an incredibly unique opportunity for students to meaningfully define what the future of leadership at MIT looks like.
